Conker's Frist Criticism!

"This is disgusting, sophomoric humor, and I'm disappointed in Nintendo," said Susan Jeffereys, a mother of two and a part-time elementary school teacher in Sherrerville, Indiana "It's like Disney releasing pornography."

Jeffereys, who has not played the game, said she mistakenly bought "Conker's BFD" for her 15-year-old son for his birthday. "Now I know why the clerk smirked when I paid for this," she said.

Well Ign gave the game a 9.9, the game has UK language so it wil certainly be a hit with the British as we have asense of humor, abviously Nothing interesing happens in Indiana so this woman decided to kick up a fuss...and er...if anyone you know causes a fuss...pi$$ on them....ha ha ha...Sorry...but seriously The game is directed very much towards the British sense of humor. The game has sold in America because of the Hype and Now it will sell in the UK because of the Gameplay and Attitude....what a dastardly plan by those Twycross terrors!

Actually, I was succumbing to our steriotypical perception of the average intelligence of americans......

Yup.

> Then again, if there's a picture of a squirrel on the front of the box, do you really expect to have to check to see if it's suitable for a 15 year old? I haven't seen the box, so I don't know how obvious it is. <

It's obvious: The box is rather colorful, except for this big black bar along the bottom with big, white writing that says, "Not for players under the age of 17." If she missed it, she's either incompetent, blind, or would rather the gaming industry raise her kid for her.

Okay. First of all, this idiotic woman in no way represents the average American. I'm sorry, but she's getting all 'parental' despite the fact that she took little interest in what she was getting her son: The game has a rather large banner along the bottom of it that says, "MATURE CONTENT - We recommend that people under the age of 17 not play this game," or something along those lines. I'm sorry, but it's a massive statement on the front of the box. Though the news article is right: She 'mistakenly' bought it because she 'mistakenly' forgot to give any regard for what she was spending $60 on for her child.

And, believe it or not, but Americans tend to love British humour. This story has nothing to do with Americans hating the British attitude of Conker's BFD; it's about the fact that a bunch of neglectful, publicity-seeking scamps would rather blame a videogame company than take responsibility for their own shortcomings as a parent. The reason the press is running the story at all is simple: the media is trying to get the US government involved in the gaming industry. Why? Because it'll get them a LOT of ratings on their news stations. After all, sub-standard parents could watch their news program because, after all, it concerns their children and it makes them feel good to get upset about it, since it *obviously* proves how much they care. Of course, as soon as the government DOES get involved, the press will start attacking them with news stories featuring titles like, "The government gets involved in gaming, but is it a rebuke to 1st Amendment rights?"

It'll be wonderful for the news networks; they'll get ratings up the wazoo, and it'll last for months while inept doctors go back and forth, saying that "games cause violence" or that "games keep people from doing violence". Of course, neither side will have any hard evidence, but the media won't care. In a sane society, somebody would have asked this woman, "And where were you while your credit card was being used to purchase the game with the large, overtly noticeable disclaimer on the front saying it wasn't intended for players under the age of 17?" Believe me, that's how most people I know are reacting to this. Other than the news media, very few people are on this woman's side.

You would have thought that the 'mature' rating is the first thing that draws your attention. Then again when I was ten my parents allowed me to watch Robocop. I begged them for ages to let me watch it, and in the end they gave in - after fifteen minutes they switched it off and refused me to watch anymore. The fact that I was enjoying it didnt matter, they took it back to the video store to complain, only to realise it had an 18 rating which they never saw!!! Needless to say they were left with egg on their faces!!

It does make you think about the patheticness of parentage, mind...

"The child wants it, the child gets it."

It seems to me that some parents are unable to make their own decisions... Even though the woman was upset by the content of the game, she happily brought a 18 certificate game for her 15 year old son... So the fact that the content is exactly as it says on the tin, I suppose, is the fault of Nintendo.

I don't think violent games would affect a child of 15 anyway, and I also think the woman is over-reacting... but then, I haven't played the game yet. :0)

The Americans always seem to make a fuss over things!

I can't wait to hear about how Anne Robinson goes in America when filming "The Weakest Link" over there!

After the racist comments she made about the Welsh I hate her!
