Recently the amount of downloading going on has rocketed through the roof. This is mainly due to the fact of P2P file sharing. This enables users, who have never met, to share files over the Internet.

P2P enable you to share huge amounts of files (including games, music, movies etc.) over the net with other such users. With new faster broadband internets, it is much easier and faster to download all these files, and therefore it is happening much more.

Companies such as freeserve say such things, “It is up to customer what they do online but it does use up a large amount of bandwidth and the cost has to be shared by all consumers.

Record companies however are very worried by the whole idea of P2P. Every time a record is bought they make a profit. However every time a record is downloaded, they make no money at all. There are worries a few companies may be put out of business. On the other hand however, more records are being bought. This is because people download a song to listen to it and see if they like it, then going out to buy the single, or if they like more songs the album.

However the fact still stands that it is illegal for someone to copy the music, as it is breaching the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998. It says that any distribution is an offence, so every time you download a song, you are committing an offence.

It is possible for the companies/the government to track what you have been doing and see if you have been downloading music and prosecute you. They can ask your distributor to tell them what you have been doing online, and they have to say.

Also there is the question of whether P2P is safe. This is because it lets another user access your PC to download the song. This is giving them information and the potential to be able to hack you.

I think that it is a good idea, and if the law was changed it could take the world by storm. Now you see record Companies … now you don’t….

So do you people think P2P file sharing is right or wrong? Discuss here...
