Recently the amount of downloading going on has rocketed through the roof. This is mainly due to the fact of P2P file sharing. This enables users, who have never met, to share files over the Internet.

P2P enable you to share huge amounts of files (including games, music, movies etc.) over the net with other such users. With new faster broadband internets, it is much easier and faster to download all these files, and therefore it is happening much more.

Companies such as freeserve say such things, “It is up to customer what they do online but it does use up a large amount of bandwidth and the cost has to be shared by all consumers.

Record companies however are very worried by the whole idea of P2P. Every time a record is bought they make a profit. However every time a record is downloaded, they make no money at all. There are worries a few companies may be put out of business. On the other hand however, more records are being bought. This is because people download a song to listen to it and see if they like it, then going out to buy the single, or if they like more songs the album.

However the fact still stands that it is illegal for someone to copy the music, as it is breaching the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998. It says that any distribution is an offence, so every time you download a song, you are committing an offence.

It is possible for the companies/the government to track what you have been doing and see if you have been downloading music and prosecute you. They can ask your distributor to tell them what you have been doing online, and they have to say.

Also there is the question of whether P2P is safe. This is because it lets another user access your PC to download the song. This is giving them information and the potential to be able to hack you.

I think that it is a good idea, and if the law was changed it could take the world by storm. Now you see record Companies … now you don’t….

So do you people think P2P file sharing is right or wrong? Discuss here...

The charts don't bother me. I choose to ignore them as it is incredibly rare that anything half-decent makes it into them.

We all like something for nothing too, but you do need to be aware of how easy it is for something to be classed as Piracy. I don't approve of piracy but I would definately be hypocritical if I were to say I've never dabbled with it. I admit I used to Pirate PSOne games - purely because it was so easy and the videogame industry wasn't too important back then. But now, the Gaming industry is possibly the biggest out there and I'd rather support it due to the masses of potential it has.

P2P is also good for the bootlegs/remixes you just can't get anywhere else.

Yes, I agree with you that a lot of the 'songs' in the chart are awful. Something for nothing, i like the idea of that.

I don't care about all that, I just like getting something for nothing, and getting one over on rich recording companies that fill the charts with 90% crap.

Yeah, there you go, some people do try to buy, but do not want to have to pay the ridicuolous sum of three pounds for one song.

I only download the occasional song, mainly on a try-then-buy basis. But sometimes I will download a song which is 'OK' but not worth the £3+ being charged for singles.

I never buy singles anyway. I only buy albums because I believe singles don't show the true talent of an artist/band. Plus they're more value for money in the long run..

Yes, I too download much music of Kazaa. I don't think it's wrong because the artists earn so much money anyway that the odd downloaded albulm here and there does not make huge differences to their bank accounts.

Also, I know this is not true for most people, but some people downlaod a song, and if they like it go out and buy the albulm. Granted, some just then download the whole albulm, but with people trying then buying, the amount of lost money is minimal.

p2p is a great thing. I take it for granted now that I can obtain any media I want, and I don't feel in the least bit guilty about it.
