Hi there.

Can anyone reccomend me a decent (free) C++ compiler that I can start to learn on? Because there seems to be so many out there - It's difficult to know what the difference is.

What do you guys use? I'm guessing obviously the people with Linux'll use its own compiler - but hey.

Thanks.

If you want to deal with snazzy graphics and media files, you really want to be looking for DirectX and OpenGL, rather than C/C++ tutorials. I don't know about openGL, but there are a lot of tutorials/books on DirectX around.

http://www.gamespp.com/

Some of the pages were down last time I checked, but most things you need to know related to graphics/media should be there in some form or other.

You could try www.gametutorials.com/Tutorials/tutorials.htm There are tutorials on Windows programming, direct X and making games. I used a couple of them a while back and they were pretty good.

Well some of quake would have been written in OpenGL or something.

The Linux kernel was written in C.

Windows was written in C++ (for the most part).

That's exactly what i'm after aswell monkey_man - A decent tutorial that teach's us something useful for once.

I understand how to use ll of the basic functions. ll these tutorials tell me to do is to just do mathmatic equations with user input etc.

Or "Hello World"

That's the one thing I haven't been able to do with C yet - anything useful!

I know how to read and print strings, arrays, etc... all the basic functions, but haven't yet learnt how to incorporate graphics, media files, etc. Are there any decent websites with tutorials that go beyond reading and displaying user inputs?

Also, I read once that the original Quake was programmed entirely in C - is that true?

What else is there to do in C/C++? It all seems exactly the same as Java with a few minor differences.

I've learnt all about arrays/strings/pointers/functions before in languages such as VB and Java - it all seems so primitive at the moment. Tutorials on the web seem to just say the same thing.

"Make a console app - ask for user input - say hello to them" etc.

So like....What can you honestly do in C++?

I was going to recommend the borland one, but looking at that bloodshed one I think I'm going to have to download a copy. Looks like it could be pretty useful.
