OK, I've just been on another forum and apparently they can find out my IP address pretty easily using an IP Logger. How does this work exactly; is it every time I post a message they can trace that, and if so, how?

Finally, is there any way they can, y'know, get into my computer?

I don't normally ask these questions because I thought an up todate virus checker and firewall usually does the trick. I know Ips can be logged by websites using scripts, by other users on a forum... how (for the third time)?

Yeah, there's an ip: logged below each message, though clicking on it informs me that access is denied. That means that person must have been a hacker, or a firend of an admin...

If it's the last one... I'll just reformat their HD when they ask for help next...

If you traceroute someones ip and they're at a University, it's pretty obvious when it ends at something like *.umist.ac.uk (Manc Uni from memory).

There is no possible way these guys can get your ip address from a post you've made unless:

1. The forums logged your address, and they are admins
2. The forums logged your address, and they have cracked an admin password
3. The forums logged your address, and they have cracked the forum db (very unlikely)
4. The forums logged your address and are configured to allow anyone to see it (most likely imo, otherwise they wouldn't shout about it)
5. They are Manc Uni students down the hall and are tOyInG wItH yOuR mInD!

Look for a link around peoples posts that says ip: logged or ip: x.x.x.x

Well it does but as cookie monster said its not always accurate. Think each ISP has to rent(or whatever) certain IP blocks. So from these blocks trackers can identify where the ISP is located. Also if you do a trace then you can pretty much give a good idea of a location as the tracer will use your IP and then work out a route between you and the other computer. There are a few programs that allow you to put IPs or URLs in and it will give a pretty clear path of how the data travels and to which routers and networks.

Norton has an IP tracker, it shows a map and pinpoints where the IP is from, i can't attest to its accuracy though.

Obviously just another spammer, but it slightly worries me that other users, and therefore anyone (especially as he hasn't registered) can find it out like that.

Well getting past SR security would be a very tough job. And its obviously illegal. There is definatly no chance of any of us getting your IP.

Unless you directly mentioned it in a post or something.
