The biggest debate in gaming history, 'why don't girls play computer games?' is getting rather tedious now! Magazines waste pages and ink on this topic and to achieve what?
Well girls do play computer games! In fact more and more girls seem to be picking up a controller and blasting away at a game. Maybe the majority of us, males, think girls don't play games is because they don't buy hardware. No, girls seem to prefer to use their brother's or boyfriend's console and games. But what is wrong with that?
I admit that a lot of girls do not play computer games and prefer to do more "social" activities, but to ask the question why no girls play games is wrong. Yes, gameplaying girls may seem to prefer to play cutesy games like Mario Kart but some also do enjoy a shoot 'em up.
I don't care if girls play games or not but to waste pages of expensive magazines with a debate on the issue where its mostly boys who write in, really does annoy me. Girls are not as much "hardcore" gamers as us males but a lot will have a go. And at the end of the day, computer games are there to be enjoyed by anyone and I have yet to read a case of a game and find the phrase "Boys Only". So lets forget about this issue and move on to much more important issues as the way game companies treat the European market.

It's not your Sex that makes you a gamesplayer, it's your character.

Anyone who disagrees is dim.

Some girls like games, some don't.

Most can't be arsed to spend hours of phonebills speaking about them on some website for some futile chance of winning a game!

Women should stay away from games! Have you ever heard of Bits, It is a channel 4 production and it is all about games. Those girls are so out of date they still think that Conker has no UK release date, I told them srtaight, they should swap Emily, Aleks and Bouff for Eddy, Alex and Brian. Women just don't think in the same way as the lads, they are in nomansland when it comes to a PS2 or Dreamcast!

Some girls do,
Some girls don't.

Can refer to anything really.

My wife never used to play games before she met me, but now she does.

She likes Goldeneye, Zelda, Mario Party 2, DK64, Harvest Moon, Sim City and lots of other stuff.

There is no reason why games should be male oriented or female oriented, they appeal to different types of people, be they male or female.

A contentious issue this one. It seems to me that the male is more game orientated due to the competitive nature of being male, we like to be the best at everything we do, and gaming is one outlet for expressing this, being able to beat a computer, or the developers, at their own game.

This, of course, is a wild generalization, I'm not implying that girls don't play games, a lot do, and I'm not implying that they are not competitive, a lot are. I'm not generalizing the male stereotype either, it just seems to me that the gamers' world is very male orientated.

This theory could perhaps be supported by data available from Special Reserves membership database. For example:-

What is the ratio of girls : boys in the membership?
What is the sales ratio for these elements?
What is the genre mix for these elements (do girls and boys like different types of game for example)?

These and other questions could easily be answered, or perhaps a survey conducted, the results of which could be passed on to the development community to see what they could do about providing a more satisfactory gaming experience for either group.

How many females in this forum, for example, would agree that there is not enough out there for them, that something more is required?

How many males in this forum, for example, would think that gaming is too male orientated? And do we care?
