I normally enjoy tailors, the movie can wait so I can see a collection of trailers to the biggest upcoming blockbusters. But no Texas Chainsaw Massacre or brand new Matrix Revolutions trailer was going to distract from why I was here; I was here to see the fourth movie of Quentin Tarantino.

Was it all about to blow up in Quentin’s face? Reservoir Dogs was the Super Mario Brothers of the genre, Pulp Fiction was the Super Mario World and Jackie Brown… Jackie Brown was the Rayman… not bad but by no means memorable. And so we enter his fourth movie, was it to hark back to his days of superb scripting and excellent direction or were we about to witness the Jackie Brown of a blooper? Let me assure you from the start, this is none of the above… Tarantino has silenced the critics in the most confident, smart fashion known to man. Pirates of the Caribbean step aside, we have a new movie of the year.

Quentin has used many of his trademark images to remind you you’re in safe territory, you get the sub-titles throughout and the movie starts with the ending again. It isn’t difficult to follow and Tarantino fans will be so accustomed to it that it’s more comfortable to see as opposed to unnerving. From then on in the movie is shown via chapters as “The Bride” (Uma Thurman) attempts to kill five people responsible for ruining her wedding day by trying to kill her and murdering her husband and unborn baby. Within these first five chapters you will witness the most diverse movie making known to man in which is surly the best black comedy that has ever graced our screens.

You’re going to get a little sad at some points, the death of parents in front of their children occurs in 2 separate situations and it is relatively depressing. But it invokes anger from the viewer, this is a revenge movie and you’re going to want it as much as the characters. The rest of the time you will be laughing your head off, from the sick “I’m Buck and I like to f**k” to the incredibly over the top fantastic katana wielding murderous finale.

One of the most disappointing aspects of the film is the lack of quotable lines (bar possible the aforementioned “Buck” line). Whilst Pulp Fiction was filled with “Zed’s dead honey”, “I’m sorry did I break your concentration” and “Did you read a sign out front reading dead n*ger storage?” Kill Bill features next to none... it is more about the action than the clever monologues or dialogues (although the dialogue between the 2 shop owners was hilarious). To some this maybe a disappointment, but it isn’t to me, Q.T has kicked the Wachowski Brothers right in the head with the coolest movie of the year. The 88 Yakuza fight puts the Agent Smith fight to such shame that I’m surprised the scene hasn’t decided to delete itself. Quentin himself attacked the CGI phenomena declaring if he wanted to see that he’d “stick my dick in my Nintendo”. Here here.

Upon saying that, Kill Bill is subject to another criticism that is shared with the recent Matrix films. And that the film is split into two halves. Q.T could easily reduce this movie to form a 2 hour plus piece of fantastic movie making, instead we have to wait till February before he’ll introduce the more dialogue heavy second part (which should silence any remaining critic). Did we get a half price ticket to the first half then? No, we didn’t and if it wasn’t for the fact the movie was incredible I’d feel slightly cheated by that. So here I am given the difficult task to review half a movie… again.

But it isn’t really that hard. The movie is jammed packed with so much to look at that it has easily become Q.T’s greatest movie. One chapter, shown after the dark comic escape from hospital, is a section showing Lucy Liu’s character’s fall into a seedy murderous underworld. This entire section is done in a very clever, very well done anime scene. No separate DVD needed here (now is there Wachowski’s), we have a anime scene which sticks to the over the top gore used throughout the rest of the film and displays violence in its most horrific. Another amazing scene is of course the final fantastic samurai fight and this is just brilliant, Q.T has shot half the scene in black and white, a bit of it is silhouetted on a blue backdrop and it is accompanied with an amazing soundtrack. Clever.

The soundtrack is very very cool, and accompanies the movie perfectly. Especially the infamous trailer soundtrack, which is played as Lucy Liu walks into her club for the first time. Lucy Liu in fact plays a brilliant Femme Fatale, a beautifully seductive killing machine and you still have a slight pang of pity for her as well. She has perfected the “b!tch” role from her Ally McBeale days and she uses it to full effect here, although the noble aspect to the character will be a new experience for the inspiring actor. Uma Thurman is the star of the show and is absolutely fantastic. She was indeed born for her role in Kill Bill. Other actors such as Vivica A. Fox managed to carry their character excellently and proves that casting is still one of Q.T’s strong points.

Lack in dialogue and frustratingly split into two halves perhaps… but Kill Bill has not only made the Wachowski brothers look like idiots but every anti-Tarantino critic that ever walked the earth as well. If movies were women then I have truly found my one, roll on part 2.

If you want fantasy violence, loads of blood and a huge body count, John Woo has made many movies in this vein, and is a master of it.

It is pretty difficult but it's more accurate.

I mean the amount of 5 star films are not neccessarily all as good as eachother.

I suppose it is your own personal rating from your own personal scale, he rates them precisely, and that is his choice.

They may end up trying to take on 88 memebers of the Yakuza... and see if they have a similar success rate.
