Games cost too much to develop. As such, the industry cannot afford to take too many risks.

A couple of flops, and it could all be over for the smaller developers. That's not good. They need another way to bring in some capital.

How would you feel about product placement in games?

I believe that, if it wasn't too daft, it could add to the realism, and feel of the game.

For instance in an FPA or FPS you could walk into a room, and there might be a copy of 'Hello' magazine of the table.

Maybe there would be a Coca-Cola lorry parked in the streets, or a Virgin billboard.

It would be so easy in sports games, as that's so heavily sponsored anyway.

It could even go as far as TV show sponsorship. Maybe once you but the game in a screen would come up:

This game is brought to you today by Kelloggs Frosties, and maybe Tony the Tiger would make a guest appearance in the game....

Product placment used to be big business in the early ninties

(aroud the original series of GamesMaster) when SENS and Megadrive where really popular and the Sun used to have pullout sections, and footbal mags used to feature Mario)...

Football games had real ads on the pitch edge, you would collect Pepsi or Coke Cola cans for energy...

Peoeple were sonsering games... some companies were even making games as promos... (quavers, et al.)...

But it started to dry up about the same time as the 'big' popularity in the consoels started to die down...

Although since games in the last couple of year have actually, finally become a 'real' mainstream entertainment field... maybe it'll start up again?

(I was playing Theme Hospital a couple of weeks bak... and the drinks machines do all have KitKat ads :) )

Product Placement would be ideal in a game such as The Getaway.

With a whole area of London to drive around, it would be stupid if they had to remove shop/product names and logos to avoid 'copyright issues' - so why not get the companies concerned to sponsor the game?

The problem is image. I know many companies are concerned about the type of game their logos appear in, in case it somehow gives them the wrong image - particularly in games about crime. I tend to think it's nonsense though.

As long as it doesn't get silly, I'm all for sponsorship in the form of product placement in games. Of course there are games where it simply wouldn't work, but where possible, why not use it? It should certainly help keep the cost of games down.

Product Placements been going on for years now, before Lara Lucozade was placed in a cool Team17 game for the Amiga called Superfrog.

Also Penguin sponsored Robocod on the Amiga!

Now today we have to live with this legacy by having Snickers adverts while playing FIFA!

Great Idea Meka, I think companies should consider this especially internet gaming sites. I think that if IGN or even Special Reserve got a low time developer to stcik the name and number of a company in a game we would see some great stuff!
