One year on

Tomorrow I have been posting one whole year on SR and whilst it may not be as much as some wrinkled old members like Meka Dragon and KR, I have been here long enough to know the forums quite well.

I have seen the election of AfroJoe, Insane Bartender, Rosalind and Grandprix, I have seen the rise and fall of some good and some less good posters. I remember the good old days where 3 GAD competitions ran side by side and everyone collected an abundance of games. I remember the days when Meka’s GAD count wasn’t into the 30’s and I remember Crazy Col’s utterly shameless election plugs. I will miss BEARDS, perhaps the best staff member ever to be. He came back as a regular and then slowly dissolved from posting. Shame.

I risk sounding like an old man when I say the old days were the best. Maybe that is because chat forums were a new thing to me and new things always seem better to begin with, but maybe it was because the Gad 1 competition was running and people made an effort with their posts. People will only really bother with something if there is a potential prize for it. There are a few posters who have continued to post their creative genius regardless of whether a prize is on offer or not, RoJ, Black Glove and Sfone (He changed his name to something else). These are the people who keep the forum afloat in the sea of spam we are swimming in as of late. (Psst Black Glove will be next notable)

They are bringing back another prize, hurrah, perhaps things will change and be like the old days again with quality posts and loads of insightfulness that are actually worth reading. I hope so. I remember in spring this year when SR announced that there would only be 1 gameaday prize and a heck of a lot of members dropped like flies. I think though that the best people, those who like myself post here not for any personal gain. I think the best stories or posts come when they are written for the sheer love of writing as opposed to a potential reward. That’s why tabloids are such rubbish.

So one year on and I feel I know these forums a lot. I remember the days when only “future of gaming (chat)” was used for general topics and the life forum was somewhere where intelligent posts were made. Now it is lucky if we get a link to a topical news headline from Goatboy. I would like to think that in one year I had brought something to the forums but when compared to clever posters like Mojojojo and Monkey_With_Attitude, I am like David (with no slingshot) against Goliath. I would like to think I had made people laugh and being funny but compare me to the likes of Mystique, who went to great length to emphasise calling me gay as to make a side-splittingly funny animation about it, or the dry sense of humour of El Blokey who never fails to make me laugh, I have nothing to offer the forums in that department.

So why do I keep posting if I feel I have nothing to offer? Because I like it here, I feel I know some of you people pretty well and you never fail to offer me good advice that has helped me a great deal in my life. Ranging from exam revision tips to getting laid or not, you have been there for me. This is as sentimental as I get, otherwise I fear I will sound like some rubbish clichéd chick flick starring Hugh ‘utter gimp’ Grant.
