That's right, I'm going halves with my girlfriend on a new laptop for our 4 year anniversary - like an electronic baby, with a screen for a face. I've browsed various websites (SR included) and I've whittled it down to a few selections:
Toshiba Sat Pro 2.2 GHz, 30Gb Hard Drive, 256 RAM + 256 RAM upgrade - all for just under £800.
Medion 2.66 GHz, 40GB Hard Drive, 512 RAM, NVidia Graphics Card - £999
They're the best 2 I've found. I don't necessarily want to pay as much as the second choice, as the only significant difference is the graphics card, but it's from a shop as oppossed to ordering online. Hmmm. Thoughts?

The Medion then. Assuming that the graphics card is ok and you it has decent enough sound capabilities.
Seriously, it's for my girlie to take into Uni to do her dissetation on, then next year I have to do my dissetation/project, so I need something portable for audio recording/design work. After that it'll become the PC side of my home studio, next to my Mac running the latest version of Logic. Honest.
Just spend less money and get a portable dvd player instead.
OK, so you can't write or play games with one, but you can still view plenty of porn on the go, and that's the best feature anyway.

Use at home? Just get a kickass PC for a couple hundred more. Laptops suck to write on.

It's going to have a lot of high-spec software on it.
My desktop PC is a Medion and they supply very high spec machines at a low cost. Mine's been fine since I got it about a year and a half ago, so in terms of going with what you know, I'd veer towards that brand. That said, I never really know what use laptops are. If your laptop is intended for use in the Uni library, for example, then why do you need such a high spec? Any old laptop that runs Word will suffice. A high spec laptop is something that very few people will ever get any benefit from, in my humble opinion.
Yeah, get a tablet instead.
