Hello,

I've subscribed to a 512k ADSL service and its contention ratio is 50:1, but what I want to know is does this mean I'm sharing 512k with 49 other people?! And if that's so then I guess there's a big downside to ADSL. I mean, I could be connected to the net at only 92k or something at peak times even though the connection icon in the taskbar says 512k. Is Windows misleading in this way?

Yes but if something is "not supported", it usually implies ineptitude :-)

Nope its not misleading. They do not support p2p. What I mean is you cant run the software. Go to the Plusnet website(www.plus.net) and see for yourself. Probably how they do it is through the port numbers as Kazaa etc use certain ports so they may block these. This is what Plusnet say about there £18.99 service.

"What services are not supported by ADSL Home Surf?
To provide you with high-speed Broadband ADSL at the lowest price possible, ADSL Home Surf does not support the use of bandwidth hungry file sharing applications. By focussing on the services you want, including email and high-speed world wide web access, ADSL Home Surf offers unbeatable broadband value for home users that don't want access to 'peer to peer' (P2P) applications.

In addition, access to binary USENET groups both via PlusNet 's internal USENET servers and any external feeds, is not available. Through active port monitoring, Internet connections for these online applications will not be possible via your ADSL Home Surf connection.

Software programs not supported include, but are not limited to, KaZaA, Gnutella, Edonkey, Napster, WinMX, Aimster and Audiogalaxy. To ensure the quality of service offered through Home Surf, all further file-sharing applications that become available will similarly not be supported.

For full access to file sharing applications or binary USENET newsgroups, choose our ADSL Home Self-Install account."

Its only a couple of £'s more so worth it. Too be honested I havent used Kazaa for a good year really. P2P is ok but too much rubbish on their puts me off.

I almost did go for that package but instead I went for the 21.99 one so I could use Kaaza.

Well most home packages that are done are 50:1 as thats what BT sell them at. Are you talking about Home Worker package with Plusnet? I wouldnt bother spending the extra money. Just upgrade to get home 1mb instead.

These contention ratios are really worst case and I dont think are implemented at all. I've had ADSL for around 16 months and whether it be day or night I have had full speed. I havent heard of anyone who has contention problems. BT are selling it at 50:1 as otherwise 1:1 would be alot of money as its basically a leased line.

Think about the power connected to your house, if everyone in the UK turned all there electrical equipement on then their would be chaos, we use what we need and share it. Same with ADSL theres so much bandwidth that at times we may get contended in the future especially when ADSL starts to come into its 8mb limit. Also with these contention ratios I have heard that the 50:1 is actually based on the 10mbit line card. So basically if 20 users are connected to the line card then they get full speed. And then any new users will slow the other 20 down just a little. Dont forget that everyone connected will have to be using the internet at the same time and at full speed.

But as I've said I havent heard of any contention issues and I dont think contention will be an issue any time soon.
