Just doing this now (had to delete a gig of music!), it's taking forever. On the bit where it tells you what it's installing, does it do HL2 and CS:S by default? It looked like I could select CS only, but it does HL2 anyway, right?

Yeah you only get the bare minimum for css, so some of the large hl2 files are not downloaded.

I think you can do CS only with the download method.
Some of the GCF files are for HL2 and not CS so I'm assuming it won't download those.

Also, if I use your fancy pants download method, can I do CS only? I assume it's the same as install, so it would have to be all 3.5+ Gigs?

You could always download it through steam, if you have a spare 2 or more hours.

Maybe your cd's funked.

Yeah that makes sense. Yours was fine at the start while everyone else's was messed up BUT now everyone else's is fine and yours is messed up. It's lose, lose.

Retail. The retail edition I used before that worked fine, with no hitches, whilst everyone else was complaining about their copies!

are you using a backed-up install?, retail cd's or downloading?

It's well over a year old now, nearly 2!

I think the crash actually had something to do with an Apache server I installed, then tried to delete - something to do with monitoring was still on the go. Deleted that now, hasn't crashed yet.

EDIT #1: Although I was getting internal errors on the Half Life 2 bit. Bah.

EDIT #2: And with that, the installation crashes again. New error message too.
