Not only were there not enough consoles but, depending on when you ordered your Playstation 2, you might have had to wait months to actually receive it through delivery. Because it was not easily available people started taking advantage of this by ordering three or more Playstation 2's so that they could sell them at eye-popping prices. But there was a reason for Sony making you order the Playstation 2, two reasons in fact (I think).
1. When it was released in Japan there was so many muggings (and even murders) by people to get hold of someone else’s Playstation 2 that Sony feared it would happen over here so that's why people had to order it.
2. Sony wanted to make people wait so that they would want a Playstation 2 more and more and people would not think twice about its cost (£300).
Some people are probably still waiting to receive there Playstation 2 even though you can now buy it on the shelves. Of course, the price hasn't altered but a little bird told me that in Easter the price of the Playstation 2 is going to drop by £100!
As soon as the Playstation 2 was released Sega noticed a massive drop in the number of Dreamcasts sold (what do you expect being up against the likes of the psx2). I hate to break this to all the Dreamcast owners but did you know that Sega are stopping the development of the Dreamcast in March? (thats what I heard, it may only be a rumour).
I have a reputation in my part of town for buying the newest computer available so many of my friends were shocked when I told them I wasn't going to buy a Dreamcast, I was going to wait for the Playstation 2 to come out. Let me tell you why...
...Everyone knew that the Playstation 2 was going to be something special, it had to be or else the Dreamcast would have dominated. But people underestimated how 'special' it really was. The Playstation 2 is a multi-entertainment system. It has the capability to play DVD's and music CD's, you can even connect to the internet if you have an external modem. But they were nothing compared to its unbelievable power. The Playstation 2 has the ability to run the most 3D enhanced games I have ever seen, from Dead or Alive 2 to Ridge Racer 5. The graphics are just amazing compared to the Playstation 1.
Not only did it have all of these amazing features but games from the Playstation 1 are compatible with the Playstation 2. So are peripherals from the Playstation 1. In my opinion, this was really very kind of Sony as they could have totally ripped everyone off and made it so that none of these things were compatible. In fact, even if they did make everything incompatible just as many people would have probably bought it because of Sony's good name.
They may not have ripped us off in the gaming aspect of the Playstation but they certainly ripped us off when it came to the memory card. The memory card is the most needed accessory for the Playstation. Without it you wouldn't be able to save your games. How would you complete any of your games? Keeping this in mind you would expect the Playstation 2 to come WITH a memory card, considering the price of the Playstation 2. But no, Sony decided to rip everyone off by not including one. So then you would think, ah, it will only be an extra tenner. But get this...Sony charge £28 for one memory card, £28 quid, can you believe the cheek of that?! Talk about profit making.
People were also worried that Sony wouldn't make many new games, just update old ones. I'm sure Sony have big plans for the future and many new games to bring out.
Putting all this aside I can honestly say that the Playstation 2 is a console worth buying. If you do buy it you will not regret it for a second.
They are both 128 bit but that doesn't matter a bit, the fact is the Dreamcast is already a prominent feature in gaming, the developers have the experience to produce good game on the machine.
I'm sure Sega fans are pleased with it, they are getting some decent games, only because they know better then SOny at the moment.
PS2 may be technically more powerful but the N64 is still a strong going machine with RARE still working hard to bring out some good games, by far the best release i've seen in a while is Conker's Bad Fur Day, now come on you wanted mature and you've got it. The N64 isn't dead it's still there and selling.
So Sony don't think you've taken over yet.
So why are people rushing in their thousands to buy PS2. Because, as pointed out in the opening comment, the marketing hype has sucked everyone (including the person who opened this topic) in. One of my friends bought a PS2 and got it in time for Xmas. He has done nothing but complain after the initial few weeks about the lack of any truly great games. Even he is sick of waiting.
I can't understand why DC is dead but, at the end of the day, i got many months of enjoyment out of my DC and will continue to do so while all u poor PS2 owners looks forward to the titles that 'will be' and wonder how your analogue buttons on your PS2 will actually function.
Oh yeah, adn just as a final kick in the nads bear in mind that a lot of the games that will be 'Big Releases' on PS2 will be from Sega. Games like Crazy Taxi that i will have been playing for many months without having to spend £300 for the priveledge.
