Console wars. We have a new challenger!

WHO WILL WIN?

Nintys Starcube, Segas Dreancast, Sony PS", Microsoft Xbox, or the latest challenger The Indrema.

I think that Sega will be last, because no one buys it.

People buy PS" because they are been brainwished by Sonys evil marketing men.

XBox is made byb bill gates who is evil too, so no one will buy it.

Nintendo only make gamers of children so no adults will buy it, and all games are for babys.

That only leaves the INDREAMA whot will win cos my mate Dave reckons it will have lots of cool porn games.

I don't really think we can defy a winner of the console wars...I mean how do you determine the winner, I mean the wars aren't over and won't be until one company dominates the market, but think about it no-one has done that yet, SONY may have won the battle but not the war! Maybe the winner will be Nintendo, I mean they have been awfully quiet and they could be thinking of the best way to hit the market. Microsoft have had 5 years to think about what would be the best strategy...they can pawn off the trial and error methods taken by the other companies , they know what the people want and they have just go to give it to them. Sony, their PS2 is ALREDY OUT! I mean games will be great in number and so the Playstation 2 won't be a bullet short when it comes to the console shoot out later in the year! Sega, I think will be more of a factor in the race rather than a major player, the winner maybe decided by how Sega switch their allegance so they are VERY important, but who will take them under their wing...? Indrema I don't think will be very successful, all I can see is another Phillips CD-i flop and unless you have a big name like Playstation you can't afford to release an 'entertainment system' rather than a 'games console'! I just hope they can make a name for themselves! Multi-Player is the future and so maybe Nintendo will take the crown because of the many muli-player features of the Gamecube...

But whatever happens it should be good, I don't know who will win round 3 but let's hope they all put up a good fight...lock and load ladies!

While we can sit here and groan about the PlayStation and what it has done to the market, there is no doubt that it has had some positive effects aswell. It has opened up a whole new market, one which Nintendo would have never had access to. Sony has jolted Nintendo out of it's "We can't do any wrong" attitude and forced it to pull it's head out of the sand. PlayStation also gave many small developers the chance to get to grips with 3D. Very few games from the 32-bit era could be described as true 3D, due to a lack of processing power and in most cases, vision. The Saturn, PlayStation, and even the N64, were a testing ground. It was an oppurtunity for developers to learn how to process into functional and effective 3D worlds. A surprising number of these developers are breaking away from the "Mothership" and are starting to show interest in GameCube. There are 2 reasons for this.

1. You would have thought that the PlayStation's massive popularity would carve the PS2's success. This is simply not so. While a large number are interested in the PS2. it's still only a fraction of the people who own PlayStations. Sony did such a good job selling it's debut gaming console, that no one sees any reason to upgrade. If Joe Average goes into a games store and sees Sega GT running next to Ridge Racer V he's going to wonder why he should pay £300 for a machine that does the same thing as a £150 machine. When it comes down to it, the PS2 doesn't as yet have any killer software. People aren't buying games for it-They're merely usuing it as a DVD player. Proof of this lies in the fact that Midnight Club only sold 18 copies in the UK in it's first week of sale. No developer can afford to pump tens of thousands (often far more) into a title, only to sell a handful of copies. The PS2 market is just too unreliable right now. You have to wonder whether it will ever sort utself out. The only thing that can save Sony form it's predicament is killer software. Titles like Gran Tourismo 3, Metal Gear Solid 2 and The Bouncer will all sell hundreds of thousands of units, but where are they? If it's taking large, experienced, well-funded teams this long to come up with decent software, aren't we looking at an N64-type scenario? The tables are certainly turning...

2. The only reason that so few developers came on board for the N64 was becuase of Nintendo's bullish attitude concerning licencing fees and their "quality over quantity" stance. The cost of mass-producing cartridges was too high and the development tools supplied by Nintendo just weren't good enough. Various developers complained that Nintendo were also very unhelpful when it came to developer support. It's going to be completley different kettle of fish for GameCube.

Nintendo of America recently signed a deal with NDL (Numerical Design Ltd) allowing them to bring their NetImmerse technology to the party. Nintendo's Director of Software Development Support said in an interview, "NDL'S NetImmerse technology allows developers to rapidly create, port and optimise software for GameCube. Our new system was designed with developers in mind, and we are pleased to add NetImmerse to the growing suite of powerful tools available to our developers"

This same technology is currently being used to develop software for PS2 and Xbox. This means that a large number of projects will be multi-format, appearing on PS2,Xbox and GameCube. But surely we don't want ports of games that will already be available on other systems? It probably won't end up that way.

So at the end of the day then, how is Nintendo going to stand out? I could argue all day about the graphical potential of the GameCube over it's adversaries, but no one knows for sure how good it's going to be until they see it in May (E3) The one thing that I am sure of though, is that Nintendo will have a long list of platform-specific titles.

Over the past three years the Big N has been watching and waiting for the time to strike, and with the GameCube imminent, this could be it...

Replys on a postcard please ;-)
