The masses (and thats manily parents buying a console for their kids) would buy what had the most to offer!
The choice -
Playstation 2 - everyone has one, better buy that!
XBox - Has DVD player, inbuilt memory - better buy that!
Gamecube - whats that? No DVD! No thanks!

Possibly. I'm sure the more varied games catalogue would have produced better results. Remember the GC has the lowest price point, in addition to not making a loss on the consoles. The DVD feature would have upped license fees, negating the price advantage it had over the other 2.
Not enabling DVD and CD playback was a major miastake for Nintendo.
The lack of mass appeal games is why it hasn't sold well.

If the DVD player is good, then I'll dispose of my (almost brand new, absolutely fantastic) Phillips DVD Player, because as small and cool as it is, I won't need it.

I have PC and Xbox, but I find my Xbox plays some DVDs with poor framerate, and my PC...well I can't be bothered to buy decent speakers for it, and the screen is small (compared to TV)
