It isn't selling very well because of the lack of decent and universally enjoyable games. The DVD player has VERY little to do with it.

I sold 6 PS2s to one guy once.
Xboxs I sold more than PS2s, and I sold about as many GameCubes as I did Xbox.
I would only sell a PS2 to someone determined to get one.
If it was someone knew to gaming I would ask them what sort of games they were looking for. Depending on what they said I steered them towards GameCube or Xbox. Xbox for the more 'real' games, or Nintendo for the more 'fun' games. There were other factors involved to, with regards to sales of Xbox, such as not needing memory cards.
