Wet race leads to strange results

Nick Heidfeld has won the USA Grand Prix but all eyes were on the battle for the Championship. Did Alonso get the second place he needed?

The track was tough with conditions changing a lot during the race. Tyre choice was critical and a number of cars got it wrong in the early stages. They lost places as a result. Alonso got the early lead off the start and looked super fast as he stated his intentions.

It looked bad for Firman right off the bat as he and Verstappen tangle leading to both spinning. Firman also spun later in the race to scupper any chances of scoring points. Trulli also had a bad race, spinning at the same corner in two consecutive laps. Frentzen, Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher and Michael Schumacher all had moments. Fisichella, Montoya and Verstappen had numerous spins.

There were only 3 retirements in what was a very slippery race and none of them were driver error. Wilson was the first to go when an oil fire stopped his car on lap 5. Webber suffered a similar fate on lap 18 while in the lead of the race. Montoya was the final retirement on lap 58 when his suspension failed, probably due to his off road excursions.

The question is, did Alonso get that second place? The answer is no. Firman is the new SR F1 World Champion!

Heidfeld has made it 1 win and 2 second places in the last 3 races, a total of 26 points out of 30 and putting pressure on Alonso for 2nd in the Championship. Button has possibilities of taking 2nd in the Championship with a 2nd place finish in the race. Barrichello has given himself and Ferrari a boost with 3rd place. Pizzonia scores points for some points for himself and Jaguar after a barren spell with 4th place. Verstappen's car held out for 5th place. Irvine gets off the bottom of the Championship table with a 6th place finish. Raikkonen gets 2 points for 7th and Ralf Schumacher survived a late spin to take 8th and the final point.

Congratulations to Firman on winning the World Championship in his rookie season! He has one more round before he gets officially awarded the Championship at the award ceremony after the next round.

The battle for the runner up spot in the Drivers Championship and the winner of the Constructors Championship is still to be decided. It's between either Jordan, Renault or B.A.R for the Constructors and either Alonso, Heidfeld, Button or Villeneuve can take that runner up spot.

Also, the dreaded wooden spoon positions are going to the final round with Panis and Toyota currently holding those positions. They've got to score points to avoid it.

The final round is in Japan and it will be a celebration for Firman but he has to help Jordan take the Constructors, so the champagne remains on ice for now. It's going to be a great race!
