Can't help but feel times are changing, (ignoring chelsea for once! lol) I think that madrids position as the worlds best club are edging towards an end, People have been saying for sometime now that real madrids defence is weak, now its a shambles. They have lost there long standing captain and long term spain international Hierro, and more importantly Makalele. Zidane and Helguera have already stated there disgust at this deal and this may well lead to zidane not having the ability to roam he was formerly allowed, and also does not bode well for the protection of the defence.
During the summer real failed to buy in defenders and this combined with makalele's departure could be severely detrimental to them remaining the worlds best club. Pavon looks a tidy litttle defender but they still lack substance in defence and have announced Helguera is out for 2-4 weeks. There midfield is hugely classy but again it is aging and the gems of the midfield are on the wrong side of thirty. All though Madrid will probably always be one of the worlds biggest teams the gap appears to be falling, and we could soon see a far more open situation at the top of european football with 4 or 5 top clubs all competing at roughly the same level. Could be an interesting few years at the top of european football.

Makelele is a brilliant player, to all the idiots further down the thread that can't see this. He builds up the play with excellent passing and through balls, while also holding the defense together.

I'm not a big fan of Chelsea's mass spending spree, but they really did take something from Real when they acquired Makelele.

It looked like they didn't need him when they signed him, but he has turned out to be there best player.

possibly but we won't blame that until they get a few bad results! and when we see it is from lapses on the defensive side.
