For recommending Robert Rankin. I bought "Sex and Drugs and Sausage Rolls" last week, went for the cheapest one in the shop because I was still a bit uncertain. I had no cause for concern though, it is a most excellent read. It had me in convulsions by the third page, which is never a bad thing. In fact, for the whole of the first chapter I was laughing like a spastic on gas, and I have done at regular intervals throughout. The only bad thing is when you realise you're making whale noises and try to stop yourself.

His style is very different to other authors - most seem to be impartial spectators on events, whereas Rankin comes out with things like "There were no Marx brothers fans, so his comment was met with the contempt it deserved" after a joke made by one of the lead characters. I've not finished it yet, but the plot seems to hang together nicely, and it's also completely bonkers.

So....thanks. For telling me about this guy, because I wouldn't have picked it up otherwise, and I'll definitely be buying more of his stuff. Anyone who hasn't read one of his books should go out and get one. Trust me.

£6 hardback? Not bad. Still, I prefer paperback because it's less bulky. Pity the paperback is only out in about a year's time, but I've got a whole back catalogue I can read through before then.

I'm thinking of getting Web Site Story, just because the name nearly made me LOL myself in a public place. Not as good a name as The Brentford Chainstore Massacre though.

I used to love these books, but I haven't read one for ages. I particularly liked the time-travelling sprout.

There's a cockney kid character in "Witches" like that, keeps asking God to "steal my stirrer".
I got Witches from amazon for £6 hardback, didn't realise it was cos I prefer paperback.
"Antipope" is the first, I started with that one and will work my way through.

I was going to get the Antipope. It's the first in the Brentford Trilogy of five, isn't it?

I'll get the Witches of Chiswick when it comes out in paperback next year. I'm too much of a student to be paying out for hardbacks.

Sex & Drugs & Sausage Rolls is good, but I can't compare it to his other works.

No worries.
The Antipope is good, but The Witches of Chiswick is my fav so far.

"Where are you going?" asked Hairy Dave
"I don't know, I'm making it up as I go, just like the author"
