"There's not enough room in this forum for the two of us." FM slammed his emptied whisky glass down on the wooden counter. "Step outside, Grix......"

Grix eyed FM carefully. They'd known each other for a long time, but things had been gettin' a little strained lately."

"What's this about, FM," he demanded, making his way through the packed but hushed saloon and pushing the swinging doors outwards as he stepped onto the dusty ground outside.

"Well," replied FM, pushing open the doors again and following Grix outside into the hot, dry air, "You've bushwhacked one of my topics just one time too many. It's time we had this out. Mano a Mano. Poster to Poster."

Grix paused in his stride to think of a witty retort about FM's last comment, then decided that now was probably not the time.

"So, what's it to be? 10 paces, turn and fire?" asked Grix, making sure his gunbelt was fastened properly.

"You know me better than that, Grix. 30 paces." FM checked his gunbelt. The Smith and Wesson 6-shot revolver hung loosely at his right hip.

They stood back to back under the glare of the midday sun, and started to count.....

1....2....3....

The occupants of the saloon were packing the windows trying to get a glimpse of the showdown outside. This was unheard of. The last shootout in the town of Last Chance Reserve had been quite a time ago, when the Er-no posse had cleaned out the Desperate Dans, but this was different. Two equally matched opponents were about to face off.

Insane Bartender was going even more nuts behind the saloon's counter because he was losing good sales whilst all this was going on.

Outside, the count was at 25.... as FM glanced to his right and saw PB on the roof of the Red Splat Hotel and Boarding House, shotgun at hand. PB nodded with a knowing look. FM nodded back.

The count was 26.... as Grix looked across to the SR Saddlery, where he spied Sniper with his trusty Winchester Rifle. Grix gave a brief nod. Sniper returned it.

27....28...29..

Dust whirled up as both men spun to face each other. The blast of PB's shotgun firing both barrels broke the deafening silence that preceeded it, and a cloud of sand flew up at Grix's feet as the buckshot ploughed into the ground.

Grix drew his gun and took aim, FM was still drawing his because he was left handed and his belt was on the wrong way, Sniper fired his rifle, and there was a sharp report, then a clatter as PB dropped his shotgun and swandived off the roof of the hotel and landed in a horse trough.

FM grappled with his pistol, it had snagged in the holster, and he reminded himself to be more careful where he left his chewing gum.

Grix took pity. (No he didn't). Grix fired his gun. Fortunately, FM and done his research and Grix's eyesight wasn't as good as it should have been, and at 30 paces it was like trying to read a Wanted Poster through a mirage. Grix's first bullet flew out of town faster than a newbie Gameaday winner. He wasn't sure if he had hit FM or not, but then he heard FM pull back the hammer of his Smith and Wesson with a

I am posting this to get away from everyone ganging up on me....

Ant continued to dig, dig, dig. After a while, he got tired, and sat down. The voice came again, "dig, dig, dig...."

"Shush!" Ant shouted, "I'm tired!!"

Ant fell asleep. He began dreaming. Dreaming about Grix, FM, the strangers, everyone. He could tell they needed help, but he couldn't get to them!! He had to do what he had to do quickly, and then get out and help them.

Ant woke up, and began to dig again. "Good..good.." Came the voice.

"Oh crap... You have to be kidding me!" Ant shouted out...

A voice echoed through the temple... "No joke. Get digging."

Grix couldn't sleep. He was plagued by thoughts and un-answered questions. For instance, what was his Father doing with that see-through balloon a few years back? Grix always asked, but his Father would not tell him.

Anyway, Grix looked closly at the stranger. He never seemed to sleep, and this amazed Grix.
Grix began thinking about what had happened to his life over the last few weeks. He went from just a normal cowboy-type guy, to a robber, and now he was....well what was he??
Grix was very frustrated, so he got up, and went to talk to the stranger. He was just about to get up, when he noticed something. The stranger had his eyes closed, and he seemed to be...shaking. He was sweating terribly, he was shaking very hard, he was clenching his teeth and he was....glowing.
The stranger seemed to get worse and worse until he suddenly cried out, and fell unconscious.
Grix shot up, and ran over to him, extremely worried. What was going on??

MEANWHILE....

Ant thought to himself, "Okay, what do I do now?" A whisper passed through the air, "the staff...the staff.."

Ant looked carefully at the staff. He couldn't see anything he could do with it. Then, the whisper came again, "the shrine...the shrine..."

Ant looked around. There! Some sort of shrine, with a large bird on the top of it. He walked over to it...it was pure gold!! Ant touched it, and it shook. It was very unsteady.
Ant then saw some sort of hole in the shrine, shaped just like...the sapphire!!
Ant took the staff, and carefully placed the sapphire end into the hole, rather like a key. The shrine shook and then began to rise. An bright light surprised Ant, and he turned away.
His eyes became used to the light, and he watched the shrine rise, to reveal...

A smile slowly crept onto the face of the preacher as he surveyed the scene before him. Yes, things were going well. Heated arguements raged back and forth, and it was only a matter of time before chaos broke out.....and then spread ever outward, like a plague over the land.

Yes, he thought. He himself - Masala - The Dark One, had control of this town. Now, he needed only find Meisha Theralasa and there would be no stopping him. He stood up, dusted the dark brown sand from his clothes, and started off. Then he paused. Something didn't feel right. He turned to look at the gun store...

---------

Ant awoke. It was not dawn yet, but no sunlight could penetrate this place, so time was unimportant. Ant yawned. He was still tired, he hadn't slept much.

"You are awake."

The indians words burrowed their way into Ant's head. It was strange he thought, that the indian had seemed to state that rather than ask it. Stranger still, was the fact that he was now fully awake.

"yes" Ant replied.

"Good. You have learnt the ways of the first water, but one more test awaits. Take this staff. It is now yours."

The indian held out the staff on his upturned palms, and advanced towards Ant. Ant looked at the staff. It was like nothing he'd ever seen before. It was covered in strange runes, magical symbols which Ant didn't know the meaning of. At the same time though, he now understood them. The end of the staff contained a large beautifully cut sapphire, which sparkled brightly in the dimly lit temple.

Ant reached out to take the staff.

The indian spoke
"From me to you. Tahalma Una Sperancha."

The words echoed around the silent Temple of the Dead as Ant lifted the staff from the indians open hands. Electricity sparkled up and down its length, and Ant felt a new power deep inside his soul. Ant looked up at the indian, who was fading. Fading from existance, his part of the prophecy now complete.

Now it was Ant's turn to fulfill his part.
