Metroid isn't exactly what many readers think. It's not a shooter so much, say sources, as it is an adventure in first-person view -- an FPA if you will -- and not entirely at that either. Retro Studios is working to retain the true feeling of the Metroid license in first-person 3D. That means that the main character will still have the abilities that Samus remains famous for -- everything from the option to upgrade armor and weaponry to special attacks, spins, rolls, grappling hook features, and more. The game's design allows for an optional third-person view to take advantage of these features when the situation calls for it. It is believed that the third-person view is not something that can be toggled by the player, but rather is executed automatically depending on the area and task in the game.

Retro has allegedly been devoting a good amount of its programming resources to creating a balanced level of primary first-person adventure play and third-person camera mechanics where necessary. It is an ambitious endeavor, the possible upstart of a branched out genre, and if it's a successful attempt it's bound to be copied by others in the future.

"I think [the Metroid team] has a good chance of skipping by some of the pitfalls of the FPS genre," a source told us under the condition of anonymity. "They've got some really innovative ideas for jumping, targeting, movement, and camera."

This is good news. I'm glad it's not just going to be another shooter... and also, the confirmed 3rd person view, even if it's automatic, is great news.

The only problem is, they are trying something that's never been done before... and although it worked well with Shenmue... Metriod is a franchaise, and a lot of people are going to be VERY disapointed if they don't pull this off.

I'll be dissapointed in how it goes, Metroid should be the way it is nomally a scrolling 3D platformer/ shoot em' up.
Yeah we expect the same old 3D updates, but who cares, if we get a metroid that is even better than the old one who will care?

I'm thinking along the lines of Shenmue. It was a good idea waiting to happen.

Play Hidden and Dangerous to see what I mean... switching from first to third person is something you have to do all the time... if it could automatically detect when you need to use it... it would be great.

Speaking of which, when's H&D2 out? I like the look of it.

(Think of some experimental ideas that didn't work then..)

OK, experimental games that didn't quite cut the mustard, let's see.....

Ergheitz? Spiderman? Experimental is good, but it can be catastrophic.

Good design envolves experimental ideas mind... and I doubt it would be a *random* thing... expect it to switch while using the grappling hook, or jumping/rolling. That sort of thing.

It should become second nature... and is actually something I've been waiting for for a while... Hidden and Dangerous automatic... that would make the game a lot easier, and a lot more fun.

(Sorry... but we've got to defend it somehow. And what Grix says is true, at least.)

hmmm, not being able to control the views though, that could be annoying, it would have to work perfectly.

It's a bit like an analogy with banners and popups. If you WANT to view an ad, you click the banner and you know what's going to happen, it either opens in a new window or takes your current window to the page you want to view.

The popup appears out of nowhere when you are not expecting it, frequently gives birth to many more popups, and next thing you know you've got things all over your screen that you weren't expecting and didn't want there in the first place.

I hope Metroid turns out to be the former case and not the latter. Good gaming involves good control.

No.

You think Metriod is a first person shooter.

Metriod is NOT a first person shooter.
