"A manager of a Funcoland stated they were required to remove all X-Box pre-orders because Sony called and e-mailed to threaten PS2 hardware and software shipments will be shorted to the store if the store does not remove all pre-orders and marketing materials for X-Box and GameCube."
Software Etc and Babbages in America, also confirm this, and actually getting visited by Sony reps to make sure that they have actually conformed to their demands!
This is simple bullying. Sony are obviously very scared of the effect of these two consoles on them, and basically blackmailing stores into doing this sort of thing is disgusting.

I agree. I'm not saying it definitely isn't true, but I do find it hard to believe that they would. I mean, if Sega had attempted to do the same to Sony before the PS2 was launched, Sony would have dragged them through the courts etc. to stop it.

Same here. It's no different to the supposed "PS2 crushing" adverts that Microsoft are said to be considering. Childish, unfair, and totally unnecessary.
I firmly believe that Sony don't need to resort to such tactics. I think that the PS2 is already more than capable of holding its own in a market with both the GameCube and the X-Box; even moreso when the really decent games start to arrive. I see no need for Sony to (allegedly) resort to such under-hand tactics.
There's nothing wrong, IMHO, with asking retailers to push your particular product, but there *is* something wrong with asking/expecting them to remove any competition.
Anyway, not to dismiss or rubbish your post Grix, but let's not get all uptight about it until we know for sure that it is actually happening. There is always a chance, however unlikely it may seem, that it could all be a ruse by other 'interested parties' who wish to weaken Sony's current position.
I may be mistaken, but I think the instance I'd heard before was that Sony was asking some retailers to remove Dreamcast pods from their stores. There was no truth in it, though.
When was the last time you saw a Cadburys rep walk into a sweet shop and demand that they put up their posters and take down all others?
Examples:
Cadburys chocolate
Milk
Beef
Ventilation equipment (my old industry)
Building trade....
The list is endless. Suppliers are always on the backs of their stockists. This move by Sony is nothing unusual.
Obviously I'm angry because I want more people to hear about the Gamecube... and Sony aren't giving retailers the chance.
It's incredibly childish though... I didn't think anything would amount to something like that...
I seem to remember reading something similar quite a while ago, but it was proved to be unfounded.
Will be interesting to see what - if anything - develops.
