Does anyone here actually USE a steering wheel for driving games. I'd imagine on a PC they might help to make life a little easier, because keyboards and mice can be tricky in any game, but on a console?

Personally, on TOCA on the PSX, I have no trouble completing the game with a joypad, same goes for Driver, Le Mans, F1, Colin McRae....I can't think of any game really where forking out £30-£80 quid on an extra peripheral would be worth it.

A light gun for shooters, yes. Time Crisis needs one for sure. But I've yet to meet anyone who swears by their steering wheel peripheral. Anyone?

I tried it with X-Wing once. It's actually quite fun.

Very hard to control mind.

Sterring wheels are never worth the cash unless all you play is racing games!

Sidewinder Force Feedback.

*Sweeps back hair*

Midtown Madness, and Colin Macre were good with it... and I played the Carmageddons with it as well... fun for a while, I suppose.

Good device, yes. Not so good with FPS's mind.

Just out of interest, has anyone found any particular brands of steering wheel & pedals to be significantly better than any other?

Yes, I agree they'd be more fun, because they'd add a touch more reality to the gameplay I suspect, and now there's two of you I might just get one.

Hmmmm. Must earn some more money......

*ahem*

Two people :)

Steering wheels are harder to use than pads, but they're still more fun.

I'd also quite like to try using a steering wheel on non-racing games, but thats just the way I am.....

So there's ONE person, out of all the forum, that thinks a steering wheel is a decent peripheral. This is disturbing, because every time I see one in the shops, I have an urge to buy it because I enjoy the racing genre, but I still need convincing that my lap times would improve compared to using a joypad.

The chair rig sounds a good idea, and I've seen those sold too, but the cost is a bit prohibitive, as is the space requirements, I'd be better off getting an arcade machine...

The thing is it can take quite bit to get the most out of a steering wheel. I mean just a steering wheel on your lap isnt good enough, in my view you need pedals, a gear stick all set on to a solid metal frame to get the best out of it, a chair would be good too but I don't think Mr. Swift would take too kindly to a new Porshe with one less chair!

Anyhow, I do think Steering wheels are worth it, especially if you can get a solid one that doesn't feel fake. Most of the ones about £50 are quite good, but if driving aint' your bag then stick with the pads!

Which is why I suggested a racer.

No, a Simpsons Adventure in the style of the Rugrats one. But then again, Simpsons does appeal to a broader range of ages than Rugrats, so we could be having the joys of 'Simpsons Slam Dunk' wrestling, 'Simpsons: Bart in the Clocktower' shoot 'em up, and 'Homer: Quest for Duff', none of which, funnily enough, would require a steering wheel.
