Hmm, despite it's awful design, every big gaming website is trying it make the console appear majestic and almighty - probably because the really good games just haven't arrived yet (as though they're being transported from another planet)

...(Japan)...

But do you all not remember when it was horrible?

It looked ugly, like a radiator? Everyone other than SR it seems is trying to make it look more than what it is - I praise you like I should SR.

I've just been to another website (up late this morning/up early last night...?) and they make it look like a kind of all powerful alien spaceship - perhaps that's what it is! But seriously, I think these people are trying to compensate for the fact that not many games are living up to expectations so far in terms of gameplay and visual effects - the 'eye candy' just ain't sweet enough yet, so we have to be hypnotised....brainwashed....

Anyway, I don't want you all to think I amm anti PS2 - heavens no, I wouldn't waste my time. It's just I think I am right about what is going on...

Insomnia rules!

Well, who would that type of person be?

I need some coffee.

Anyway, when PS3 arrives, will it have a suspension and wings?

You know, there are some people who really wind me up sometimes.

Especially the ones who seem to do it on purpose.

I know. And I want to submit a review on Chu Chu Rocket, so I'll put it in my own post in brackets now:

(Here’s another game I felt the urge to write an opinion on! It’s the game that every Dreamcast owner should have because you either got it free with your Dreamcast, ordered it for free online last year, found it in the middle of nowhere or actual went out to buy the game! Believe it or not there are such places that are charging £29.99 or even £39.99 for Sonic Team’s freebie! I won’t embarrass the companies that are doing this though, as they aren’t exactly going to sell any! So if you can’t get hold of a ChuChu Rocket game, and would really like to get one then I’d suggest scrolling the auction sites and classified adds to see if you can get one for under a fiver.

So, why on earth would you want ChuChu Rocket? You can get a Dreamcast with Sonic Adventure and ChuChu Rocket for £99.99 from many retailers and online stores, but if you’ve already the proud owner of the 128bit white box, and for some reason haven’t got the game, then you may well be considering it. It won’t break the bank balance or burn a whole in the pocket, but £5 is £5 and you don’t want to waste your money on a poor game do you! Not that this is a poor game, because it’s actually rather impressive…

ChuChu Rocket is a really strange name for a game - it’s been produced by the fantastic Sonic Team - responsible for all the Sonic games, Samba De Amigo, Phantasy Star Online and more, so, with such quality titles under their belt, it would be a safe bet to assume their first online game would be good. It is, in fact ChuChu Rocket combines complete genius, superb 4player action and an ‘interesting’ online play, with some aspects that should never be in any game at all – it’s a two sided story here, but at least it’s ‘free’, or very inexpensive, so we can’t complain in that respect. However, I will try and tell you all the positive and negatives of the 9/10 rated game. Is it worthy of that rating? Here’s my view:

The game is mad. Let me get that out of the way – you cannot be prepared for ChuChu Rocket, as nothing is quite like it! It’s crazy, frantic but highly innovative and original so it wins my approval here. Essentially, it’s a puzzler, but it’s not quite like anything you’ve played before. This Dreamcast exclusive game (exclusive until the GBA version arrives later on this year…) features many game modes, most notably the online play for up to 4players. Let me warn you again though, as the online play does have a half-second lag time so you have to adapt your game a bit. I believe the offline play is much better though, as there is no time-lag, you can see your opponents and it won’t cost you 1p a minute for your phone bill.

The idea is to direct the mice like ‘ChuChus’ to your coloured rocket using the A, B, X, Y buttons to place down, right, left, up respectively. The more mice you get the higher the score and more chance you have of winning against the people you’re playing (be it the computer, online opponents or offline opponents). However, it’s not as easy as that. There are various obstacles that can and will knock your score right down. There are such things called KapuKapus – they’re the orange crazy cat type creatures, that both eat the ChuChu’s and, if let into your rocket, will take away one whole third of your score. But then you can direct them just as you would the mice, so if you see a KapuKapu, you’ll have to re-direct them to your opponents rockets, or into oblivion (one of the nothing squares). You may well have guessed that it does get quite frantic and insane indeed! You can place four directional arrows at anyone time, i.e. one at a time with a maximum of four on the screen at once. When you place another, the first will be removed, but after a period of time they will start to disappear anyway.

There are single player modes, in which you have to complete 25 tasks in 3 or 4 (I forget which) levels of difficulty! You have an allotted set of arrows, and a grid where you have to place them so that they all make it to the rocket. This may sound easy, but some of the levels are fiendishly difficulty, so at least there’s something to keep you busy. The longevity of the multi player modes is not quite as good as it should be, but then it’s great fun for the first few games.

The online play, although having time lag, is quite addictive to start with, and you’ll be able to play people from Italy, Spain, France, UK and Germany, and you’re score tally will be kept with a winning percentage. However, there was an online competition, but you’d have to spend hours on end to have won, and some people need their phone lines! The game gets boring when people start disconnecting just because they’re losing, and so I haven’t bothered playing online for a long time indeed. Nonetheless, ChuChu Rocket is the first online console game, so Sega should be proud. Just not as impressive as it should be. The graphics, being so simple and all, should really not affect the game whilst playing online and yet there is still a lag (Sega say because different people have different connection speeds, so the half second lag had to be implemented…) and with Quake 3 Arena online with no lag, it’s a mystery why ChuChu is like this.

There are team modes, single player modes and the network game – you can also go to the homepage.

The graphics are 2D, but the ChuChu and KapuKapu are actually in full 3D, kind of. The music is very funny, and it adds to the wackiness of the game.

It will be great for a month or so, but it’s really not that long a game.

5 stars for originality
2 stars for longevity,
4 stars for the crisp graphics,
4 stars overall I’d say, as it isn’t perfect, but it is good.

Sorry,

Just had the urge...

Anyway, Tekken Tag looks ok, but nothing on PS2 has been released yet that has really made me go 'wow'...

But, looking at those Doom 3 screens, I don't care which format that's on - I'll get it!

I dont think Sony are going to drop the Price of the Playstation 2 just yet! Theres still to many PS1s on sale, that have to be sold, besides which its looking more likely that the Gamecube wont reach our shores till late 2001, and the X-box till early 2002!

Sony will drop the price if it feels threatened, and now Sega have bailed out Sonys going to be sailing easy for a While. Although I think they may drop the price in the States to stop the advance of the X-box!

Don't forget the last minute color changes, the addition of the DVD drive that actually works this time, and, of course, the last minute switch back to the cartridge format.

:-)
