Giancarlo Fisichella has taken pole position for the Italian Grand Prix and could play a key role in the Championship. He could run as blocker for Firman as he could only manage 9th but Jordan also have the Constructors Championship to play for, so they face a dilemma.
The Championship is between 8 drivers and Verstappen needs to win and Firman not to score to stay in the hunt. The 8 drivers are have an interesting race ahead of them.
Alonso will be moderately pleased to have out qualified Firman in 8th but Firman is only one place behind in 9th. Montoya is only one place further back in 10th and Verstappen must win from 11th. Villeneuve's recent form is against him and he starts 15th. Button is further back in 18th with Trulli in 19th. De La Rosa is at the back once again and will need to drive the race of his life to stay in the title picture.
Fisichella is a key figure in this Championship race and will want to take points off Firman's challengers and he is in the perfect place, pole position. Raikkonen still has a chance of a high Championship finish and starts 2nd. The Sauber's have been exceptional recently and qualify 3rd and 4th, Heidfeld just beating Frentzen. Wilson qualifies 5th and might be able to help Verstappen. The McLaren's are in handy positions as Coulthard got 6th and Raikkonen 2nd, they could push for the Constructors. Irvine will want to avoid the wooden spoon like last year and qualifies 7th and Alonso needs a good points finish ahead of Firman to close the gap. Alonso starts 8th.
