I've got a problem... I don't understand when it was that Capitan Jack Sparrow became part of the curse. Was it when he took the coin from the chest or when he was betrayed?

When he places the last coin in the chest, but takes another as he does so - that's what I thought anyway, because earlier in the film he is moonlight and doesn't turn into a skeleton type thing.
