I've decided that when I upgrade my system I'll get two boxes - one for everyday use and one for gaming and any other heavy duty stuff I need to throw at it. It looks like it's possible to cool a Via system completely passively, which would mean virtual silence. I realise that the performance isn't going to win any prizes but I just want to be able to browse the net, email, write, do a little bit of programming (no huge compiles, and I'm happy making a cup of tea should I need to do one), and maybe some web design if I ever get my butt in gear.
I'm very tempted by the Hush PCs: http://www.hushtechnologies.com/
Other options are the Tranquil PC ( www.mini-itx.com/store/tranquilpc.asp ) or something I read about in PC Format called Bacata Blu Jour. Not much concrete info on the web about that one, mainly because it's French and the company website is high on waffle, low on prices/distributors etc.
Just wondered if anyone had any experience/opinions/rumours to share about these things.

Mainly it's a noise thing. I want a quiet system that I can work on in peace, and then an evil beast that I can play Half Life 2 on when noise isn't a big problem.

And according to the benchmarks in this review of the motherboard the Nehemiah is a big step up from the Via CPU used in the old Hush.

I'm beginning to wish I had the money to put this plan into action.

My plan is to use a wireless keyboard/mouse combo, which will need one USB port, anywhere. I'll stick a wireless access card in the PCI slot. Printer is on another box. So hopefully, hopefully I'll get that set up and then never change it again.
I'd still like to see one in action, though, and people on the Via boards are too busy cutting holes in stuff to describe how their systems actually run.

Having looked round those forums I'm pretty much decided that I'll buy a system rather than build my own. You can only passively cool a Nehemiah with a really, really big heatsink/pipe; at the moment the only off the shelf option is the Hush or Tranquil cases, which act as heatsinks themselves. Zalman have a heatsink in development, but I really can't be bothered sourcing the psu, funny case etc etc, and then watch it break down after two weeks. Hush also soak test their systems, which is reassuring.
