Firstly it is not a compression type, basically if you left click on a .asx link it plays the movie in Media Player, if you right click it saves the shortcut only. How can I download the movie to my hard drive (even if the movie plays fully in Media Player the save as is still greyed out)

Try playing it in WMP and then searching your PC for the file.
It downloads it into a temp folder.

Right click 'Save target as..'. You are able to download them to your hardrive because on WinMX and Kazaa they have .asx files up for download!
