Cinemas have changed over the last 20 years. New multiplexes now mean you can almost always get to see whatever film you want when you want which is great but they have really spoilt this event in other ways. Most notably the introduction of food on a larger scale.
I recently went to my local cinema and someone came in and sat next to me with a Hotdog. He proceeded to eat this washed down with a barrel of a drink. Then as the trailers came up he went and got some Nachos. These were then crunched and munched for the next ten minutes whilst being dipped in some strong smelling sauce. Then as the film was starting he had just finished when someone came in and sat behind me with the largest box of popcorn. Not only had this guy arrived late and disturbed the start of the film he then rummaged around for popcorn for the first forty minutes of the film.
This is not a one-off this is a regular occurrence. I now do not go to the cinema as much as I used to because of this. I will not pay the large amounts to see a film when the first half of it is spent with someone crunching or slurping in my ear totally ruining the atmosphere the film is trying to set.
I know I am not alone in this thinking and I propose that cinemas put one showing a week where no food is allowed. Surely people can go two hours without stuffing their face. If not to this extreme cinemas could not allow people to take food in once the trailers have started. However market forces will not see this peaceful way of viewing films come around. The amount of money lost by not selling popcorn etc… would be huge due to the mark up on these goods and the cinemas would not go for it.
But I can hope one day that maybe an undisturbed viewing of a film will be possible.
