If you have and your phone is equiped to work abroad it will count, otherwise I doubt it because the contact says "standard rate text messages" - abroad isn't standard unless you verify with O2 that you are abroad between X and Y dates, so the generic text will be an abroad text.
If this doesnt make sense, wait until you are abroad and send one message. If your balance goes down (assuming you are "pay as you go") then you know it hasnt worked and its only 50p you've spent. If your credit remains the same then it has worked, wahoo.
