Have you ever found yourself at a crossroads where there's an easy path that rolls downhill, there's a difficult path which winds uphill, and there's a sensible path which is straight and narrow. Something tells you that you should take the more difficult path, but the easier path is more tempting because you can breeze downhill in a wave of carefree indulgence. And then there's the sensible path, which is the road that most around you advise you to take.

Have you ever found yourself in this position? In two/three minds, not knowing which path to take, not knowing which way to turn.

Wisdom, its a strange thing. Its subjective nature means that different people have different views on what it means to be wise.

-Some will say: "Live For The Moment". Adopt the hedonistic approach. Why dwell on the future when the vision you have of your future may never happen. Even the best made plans can go wrong. Be happy-go-lucky. Live dangerously. This is wisdom.

-But then others will say: "Plan For The Future". Don't be a reckless fool, be sensible. One day you'll look back on your life and wonder where it's gone. Think about your place in the scheme of things more diligently. Hard work, self-sacrifice and realistic plans will bring you happiness in the long run. This is wisdom.

-And then there are those who will say: "Follow Your Dreams". Forget other people's limited expectations. Do what is deeply important to you. Do what you think is right. Even if your dream seems impossible, follow it. If you don't you know you'll end up looking back full of regret. If you fail, at least it'll be glorious failure. This is wisdom.

Someone once said to me that "a wise man is a man who keeps good advice to himself", but the person who told me this turned out to be a cynical back-stabber.

It's easy to be wise after the event. Hindsight isn't wisdom. But foresight is different. To have a clear-minded dose of foresight, now that is wisdom. So What's Wise?

I like reading other people's stories and stuff, but no, I don't belong to any group.
I'm just addicted to writing. Sometimes I spend all day writing gibberish.

Be wise. Always carry a condom.

Black Glove do you belong to any writing group on the internet? I have a feeling you might be inclined to that sort of thing.

*looks down*

A bit of wit, a bit of wisdom, a bit of demented claptrap... heh :)

If some flat-nosed gangsters chained me to a chair in an empty warehouse, put a gun to my head and grunted: "Okay wise guy, what's wise?", I think I'd have to say: *to be as open-minded and as empathic as possible, and to courageously go where these two states-of-mind lead you.*

Hopefully that would persuade them not to pull the trigger.

Boromir the dirty bummer wanted Frodo's ring so he was killed on principle. I would far more enjoy the films if that were the case.

Faramir - "Boromir is dead!? Tell me how this happened!"
Frodo - "He wrestled with me and tried to get at my ring but I was having none of it (Samwise being the jealous type) so I got out my little sword and give him a good wounding in the balls, Pulp Fiction style."
Faramir - "Pulp Fiction?"

"Touch the ring Gandalf"
"Wicked Hobbit! It's dark"
"Go on, touch it"
"No, I musn't"
"But Gandalf, I'm afraid"
"Do not offer me your ring"

Nasty little films

I would say wisdom is being able to make choices, but after those choices, to learn from them and use what new knowledge you have to help you make other choices in the future. Sure, knowing what you do now, you may have chosen differently in the past but Gandalf doesn't reflect on the past. He strides onward, sending messages all over the place and shooting his white streams at nozguls across middle earth.

Gandalf is wise.

A bloke should always know: when to turn down an offer of a night out as it will be a stinker, when to call it quits with the attempt to pull a young lady as you're going to end up blown out.
