OK I'm speaking as a complete neutral here, I have played on both the PS2 and the DC.

To start with as soon as I started Tekken Tag I was so disappointed it was untrue. Tekken Tag looked like Tekken 3.2! I was so angry that the gameplay was just like Tekken Tag and it was not as 3D as Soul Calibre. Now the DC is not perfect, but at least it has a good solid 3D beat'em up in Soul Calibre. So so far DC is ahead of PS2 in the beat'em up department.

Next round sporting games. OK so the DC has appauling footy games, but Sydney 2000, Virtua Tennis and Sega Bass Fishing + others make up for it. So far on the PS2 I've played snowboarding and the only thing that springs to mind is Cool Boarders. It was exactly the same. Obviously the graphical tweaks made it look slightly better, but that was not enough to keep me playing. I've began reading about ISS Pro Evolution on the PS2 and it looks really good, but apparently it plays badly. To me it seems a case of Sony giving the PS2 much more graphical capability than the PS, but they have not concentrated on the gameplay.

Next round RPG. ONe word that should make anybody come over in a shiver. Shenmue. My cousin came down for a week and after I beat him at some games we put on Shenmue, that was it, our sleeping, eating, going out to the pub had gone, he was mesmorised by the sheer genius that is Shenmue. Now PS2 has Eternal Ring (or something like that, I read about it, but have not bought it). Now the many reviews I have read said this was possibly the worst RPG on any Sony machine. They said the storyline, gameplay and the whole game was a waste of time. The final verdict on the game was 2/5 and 26% (or something like this). Don't get me wrong I think the PS2 has far better graphics than the PS and I would not go back to the PS, but the games are just so...in a word.....rubbish. Roll on MGS2!

Next round the console. My DC is nestled nicely between my video player and my TV. The opening mechanism has enough room to open and the pads are great for games like Crazy Taxi and Dead Or Alive 2. The PS2 looks futuristic, but I can't help but feel it looks too futuristic, infact Sony have made it look so modern it looks tacky. The sideways opening is a nightmare, as my PS2 is placed by the side of my TV standing up. Now the one thing the DC does not have is the DVD player. Right? Wrong. Because the first day of playing on the PS2, I decided to watch a movie, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. I opened the tray placed the disc in and set it up ready to go.....then nothing. The DVD was not working properly. I heard this happened to other people too. You see now I can't help but wonder if Sony were in such a rush to get the PS2 out in the market that they did not actually put it through the paces and have sold thousands of "faulty" machines to us, the public. Anyway for now I'm using a DVD player, much better that way, because the thing actually works!

SO my verdict is PS2 is good for a laugh, is better graphically than the DC, but never really satisfies you enough to warrant the £300 price tag. The DC now reduced in price, although games are slow to come out to start with is definitely worth half themoney for a PS2 and with slightly worse graphics, it really does outplay the PS2. My final verdict on this is the PS2 is good, but the DC is better value for money.

Final point. I know alot of you guys will reply telling me I'm insane and don't know anything, but I am entitled to my own opinion and like it or not, this was it.

Hang on... where did you hear that Soul Caliber 2 is going to be on PS2? It's not that I doubt you, it's just it's the first I've heard of it.

TTT IS Tekken 3.x, and not Tekken 4, nor has it ever claimed to be.

DC is bound to have better games in some areas for thesimple reason that it's been out longer, so there are more games available.

If I had the money, but for some reason had to decide between a PS2 and a DC, I'd choose a PS2 at this moment in time, for the simple reason that this time next year I'll be looking at a list as long as myself of forthcoming PS2 games, and I could probably write the number of DC games to be launched in mid-2002 on the back of a stamp.

The DC is no longer in producion, Sega's limited 3rd party support will jump ship, and Sega will be able to produce superior versions of their own games on other consoles.

That's not to be said that there aren't some outstanding games available for the DC, there are, it just doesn't have that long a future.

Hi Scouse. No you're not insane, there are some good points there. I agree with you on TTT, that's why I bought DOA2. Probably not the depth of TTT, but a different style of play. Once you get past the 'button bashing' stage, and actually start to play it, it gets more rewarding. Yes, the Dreamcast has Soul Caliber, but the sequel is planned for PS2.

I guess the snowboarding game you played was SSX? I disagree here. Cool Boarders was never anywhere near as much fun as SSX is. It starts off fairly slow when you haven't built up the stats for your boarder. But when you start to build up the trick and speed stats, it could almost be Wipeout on ice (that sounds like some really cr*p ice dance show!). The alternate routes are great (I particularly like the elevated half pipe on Aloha Ice Jam), and the courses show a lot of variation (for once).

There are good sports games on the PS2. Probably the best are Madden NFL 2001, and NHL 2001. If you mean that ISS looks good graphically, it's pretty weak in comparison to FIFA 2001. But as far as I can tell, both are pretty weak representations of football. In fact ISS was developed by the team who did ISS on the Nintendo 64. Apparently this was a more arcadey game than ISS Pro Evolution on the PSOne. The team who programmed ISS PE on the PSOne are working on an ISS for PS2 (Jikkyou Soccer). That should be the 'real' sequel.

Sony have obviously given the PS2 a better graphical capability. But you can't say they haven't concentrated on gameplay. Most of the games are developed and published by third parties, not Sony.

Shenmue may be a great game (one of the best on DC), but then you can't make a comparison with something like Eternal Ring, regarded as pretty mediocre. The best RPG on the PS2 currently is probably the Summoner. But again this has it's faults. Every platform has a limited number of great RPGS, partly because of the time it takes for the detail in games like these, but because of the lack of innovative ideas floating around. No doubt there will be great RPGs on the PS2. But it's still early days yet.

As for rushing out the console, I think there could be some truth in that. I've had no problems (apart from DVDs with multi platform problems), but I know a fair few people have. I think Sony fell foul of their own hype there, and simply couldn't live up to the demand. Have you had other DVD problems?

Yep, the DC is definitely better value for money at the moment. But there really is no Sony vs Sega battle. Sega have effectively thrown in the towel hardware wise, and will also be developing for PS2. Give the PS2 a few more months, and I think it will be a different story.
