I am i the only person who hates neverending sequels like the Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider series. Why can't the developers come up with some new ideas, rather than just using the same one over and over again.

So films in which the main character dies then comes back to life?

The Friday the 13th Series (part 10 in cinemas (or straight to video) this year!)

I don't think sequels are so bad, I mean I don't mind them the only thing I don't like is an over run story, a bit like a 'Friends' joke you know the charachters take a joke and just ram it into the ground, games companies can do that too, and in my view, as soon as you make a game like Tomb Raider Chronicles, you charachter, in their current state has had it's day, although I wouldn't like to call Lara Croft 'it' to her face.

But still, the same thing applies, I don't want to offend people by saying that their favourite charachters are 'driven into the ground'. Some might say Mario is but think about it, how can he be when they are not doing a 'Best of Mario' series on the current console. so the state Mario is in now is still very much alive. Same with Sonic, although we saw the best of's on the Mega Drive and the Super NES they are past consoles and so this is, to me, acceptable....am I making sense?!

A sequal is only bad if it introduces nothing new to the gameplay. For example, the FIFA games are considered 'bad sequals' because they are released every 6 months and usually have only a few graphical tweaks and updated rosters. The Zelda sequals, however, are not bad sequals, as each one is a giant leap from the previous one. The same with the Mario series (remeber the change from the SNES games to the N64 version), and the ISS series.

So the definition: Sequals are generally good, as long as they improve on the original.

Going back to my original point, what is the point of "never-ending stories" if the plot is inconsistant. Didn't Lara Croft die in Tomb Raider 4, why Tomb Raider 5 and i am sure theat Core will make more TR games for PS2. When you read a book or watch a film does the main charcater die and then just re-appear again?

which goes back to my original point, PD is in a way a sequel to Goldeneye, but the plot is different. What i hate is inconsistancy in games. Fair enough, villans can return in sequels because they are the villans, but didn't Lara Croft die in Tomb Raider 4? If so, why did Core make another game, and will probably carry on making Tomb Raider games for years to come.

Wipeout springs to mind. After 2097, there was a comment made (by Psygnosis I think), that the next one wouldn't appear till a next gen machine, because they couldn't do much more with the franchise on PSOne. Then Wipeout 3 turned up on PSOne, and didn't do that well. There's nothing wrong with sequels as long as there aren't too many on the same platform. New technology usually gives a game a good overhaul.
