Nope, it doesn't actually shutdown, it only brings up the "It is now safe to shutdown the computer" message.

I assume you can't do it in task manager ?, the only other way is DOS I guess. Or in XP Display/Settings etc alter the settings for "shut down hard drives, monitor" etc - bit of a pain I know.
In NERO you get a check box to shut-down the computer after burning/creating an image if you wish, but again pain in the ass.

The reason I want to do this, is because I've got 56K (the cause of all problems in this world), so when I'm downloading large-ish files, or a lot of files (from Kazaa, naturally) I do it through the night so that it doesn't tie up the phone line.
Anyway, I wanted to shut down the PC at a particular time or something, so that the damned thing, which is next to my bed, doesn't keep me awake, or wake me up during the night etc.

I dont know about WinXP, but i remember in Winnt4 and backwards there is a DOS command called 'AT' which works as a scheduler, if thats any good.
if you can work out how to do it through DOS its just a case of putting the command into a BAT file and using the AT command to run it (you need to make sure the SCHEDULE service is running first).
I used to use it for running database backups during the night.
at the commandline type "at /?" to see if that sheds any light on it.
Like i said, im not sure if you a) can manage to shut the pc down through dos in the first instance, and b) this service exists any more under the XP bonnet.

The download program Getright can do this. You can set it to turn your PC on at 3am, connect to the internet download something and then turn the PC off when it's finished. I'm not sure if it can do exactly what you're after, you'll have to look yourself.

Get Right is a top program, great for resuming downloads :), everyone should have it.

As soon as I read this thread I thought about the at command for unix - which I use almost nightly. Didn't know there was a Windows copy.
