So, comic fans, who wins the war of the comics? Will it be DC, with their long-standing Superman/Batman franchise and their fantastic adult comics line, or Marvel, with the currently popular X-men, Spiderman et al.

Who's better? Why? Perhaps you prefer...independants?

Marvel always had more appealing Super-Heros, which were, I felt, let down by endless cheesy gimmicy crap...

DC superheros always seemed to have naff super-powers, and reading them (a decade or two back when I still did), they always felt that they were stuck in the 50'/60's 'comic book code' era... Still they did have the Sandman series (personal all-time fave), Marvel could never have released anything like that???

Image comics now does Spawn, and all it's spinoffs, and the toys as well. Never been keen on Spawn, animated series was okay but the live action film sucked big time !

Batman, Superman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Justice League, Swamp Thing.

It's pretty much an even score on classic characters. Where the two comic companies differ is in their storytelling. Also, Vertigo has begun to stretch the bounderies of comic storytelling with Sandman, Preacher, Books of Magic and Hellblazer.

Check out some of the earlier Hellblazer work, or stories by Garth Ennis and you'll see what I mean.

You've got to respect Batman for being a self-made super hero. He has no super powers, as such, just loads of nifty gadgets and the like.

But then you come to the Spider-man, the Hulk and the X-Men, and I say that Marvel win, simply on quantity of classic characters.

My favourite superhero of all time has to be Batman... but I guess Marvel are better overall. I'd really like to get some comics actually, just out of interest, they make me smile.
