Who's better? Why? Perhaps you prefer...independants?
DC superheros always seemed to have naff super-powers, and reading them (a decade or two back when I still did), they always felt that they were stuck in the 50'/60's 'comic book code' era... Still they did have the Sandman series (personal all-time fave), Marvel could never have released anything like that???
(I like Marvel)

Image comics now does Spawn, and all it's spinoffs, and the toys as well. Never been keen on Spawn, animated series was okay but the live action film sucked big time !
It's pretty much an even score on classic characters. Where the two comic companies differ is in their storytelling. Also, Vertigo has begun to stretch the bounderies of comic storytelling with Sandman, Preacher, Books of Magic and Hellblazer.
Check out some of the earlier Hellblazer work, or stories by Garth Ennis and you'll see what I mean.
But then you come to the Spider-man, the Hulk and the X-Men, and I say that Marvel win, simply on quantity of classic characters.
