"Older gamers"

So, gaming was primarily a kiddie thing prior to the release of the PSX. Now there are many gamers who fit into a slightly older age group.

Still there are extreemely few avid gamers more than thirty years young. Is this because there are no games to appeal to this age group? Are there, in fact, any games at all that appeal to this age group, or are they simply not interested in gaming? I would suggest that they've never seen the appeal in games, never really gotten into them at all.

So, what about those of us in this generation, growing ever older - will we ever lose interest in computer games or are we in too deep?

I find it hard to believe that the generation that grew up with games will ever lose interest in games completely. We'll all get older, but we'll keep playing. This would suggest that the average age of the average gamer will creep ever upward for quite some time. In the distant future we may see gamers of all ages competing, the potential market for games growing ever more diverse as a consequence.

Gaming will one day be a thing for both young and old alike, a true family pastime to recapture the sense of togetherness which society fears is no longer there.

Interesting point. Experience or youth? Do you get worse?

I guess as you get older your responsibilities change and you don't have so much money to spend on computer and console equipment to keep up. If you don't keep up with technology you feel a bit left behind, but it's more difficult as you get more torn away from games by family and work commitments.

I'm trying to keep up, but with a mortgage and a wife who likes games, but has a limited patience and owns an evil foot to kick me off my consoles when there's work to be done, I don't get half as much time to appreciate the fine art of gaming any more.

Do you get worse at games? I don't know, I guess with anything if you don't practice it doesn't help you any. I like to think that when I'm 60 or 70 I'll still be playing games, even if it's only to show the grandchildren how to take that corner in GT7000 or jump the ravine in Tomb Raider 999. But then, I can't tell the future.

Humm.

I never think I will be able to "grow out of" games... In the same way I doubt I'll be able to "grow out of" movies.

Physically, I'm nearly 30...

Mentally, well - that's another matter entirely!

I'll be 30 at the end of July, and I stil love gaming as much as ever. Actually, as I get older, I probably enjoy it even more.

I love technology, and as videogame tech advances, I find myself being ever more impressed.

I'm just a big kid, really. Aren't grown-ups boring? :-)

Yeah, but what about when you're old? The way gaming is evolving it will be unrecognisable by the time you're about 60 or 70. Will you enjoy gaming as much as a good nap then?

Dad + N64 + Hammer = Bad Result

Mum + N64 + Kitchen Sink = OOPS!!!

Grandad + N64 = Seizure

Grandma + N64 = zzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZz!

I can't see OLD people playing computer games, maybe the old pong games on the pong console but nothing else! As for a family thing, maybe as all my brothers and sisters play the N64 now and again and even Mum and Dad on occasions, but I don't think my parents would make regulars!

The Game

Well as I'm now married, and with child(ren) I guess I'm never going to outgrow gaming!

And I think you're right about it becoming more of a family activity.

At 18 months young Malibu will sit and watch me play DK64 for ages, and my wife joins in the fun too.

Very few games get away without having a multiplayer mode these days, as gaming is becoming more social.
