Please could someone help...

I have just purchased Windows 2000 but I am having some pretty big problems. The installation has ran ok and everything is setup... apart from one major hardware device. My sound card hasn't carried over and I didn't get any setup disks for it when I got my PC about 7 years a go. I believe that my problem lies with the fact that my Hard Drive now has a partition and I still have Windows 98 installed. When I try to load the W98 partition my PC crashes and I can not find another way to remove it.

Can anyone help me remove the W98 partition?

Thankyou.

Formatting does not remove the partition, it just readies the partition for use with a file system. Your best bet if you want to completely eradicate everything on your PC is to do it as part of the XP install - it gives you the opportunity to delete and make partitions. Just delete the ones that are there and make a new one, 100% the size of the drive.

Note that if your computer is 7 years old, you may have a difficult time getting XP to run. XP will outright refuse to install on a machine that has less than 64MB of RAM, for instance.

Never. Ever. Ever get a packard bell pc.

When you get your next PC - Just buy the parts online and build it yourself.

I couldn't even get into my W98 partition to format it. I will get XP and then format my 98 drive completely before installation. Then I will unplug my soundcard and put it in another PCI port. Hopefully when I go to install XP I won't have a split partition and my soundcard will be recognised.

When I format will the partition disappear or will I need to edit the .INI file which executes the partition select screen?

Thanks for the replies. I took it back. Didn't like Windows 2000 at all and I knew it would become a pain in the ass trying to get things to work. I found out that some other people had the same problem and they had to go out and get new sound and graphics cards because with some Pakard Bell and Hewlet Packard PC's it won't let you use the Sound or Graphics cards for anything other than the OS it came on. I will never purchase a Packard Bell PC again because of this reason.

I will stick with Windows 98 for now because later this year I will be getting a new tower unit anyway so that will come with Windows XP most likely.

Save any stuff you need and re-format the drive.

Then re-install Windows 98/2000 whatever and download the drivers off the internet.

Tell us what your soundcard is.

I had similar probs with Windows 2000, hated it, ended up formatting whole hard drive and "getting" XP :)

If Windows 98 is on a different partition, there is no way it can mess up your Windows 2000 install if it's 2K that's loading. You will have to go and find drivers for your soundcard on the net - what is it?
