Personally, I cannot wait for Bill's box of tricks. After feeling 'slightly' disappointed by Sega's announcements regarding the state of Dreamcast, I think the XBox will be a sound investment. If you just look at some of the early video sequences it's clear to see why they've over 200 developement teams working with them!
Online gaming will be lag free, and we may just see the first ever decent race controller in the form of Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback, or something similar - I'm fed up of paying £30 or £40 for a piece of plastic that merely rumbles!
XBox won't fail, although we don't know that much about it in terms of...well, we don't know much about it...and a £500million advertising spree cannot really deter people from buying the Box.
I think Sony has become scared - when it entered the market back in 1995 it was a risk. They've now got 90% of the (non-handheld) console market under their belt just five years on. I think Microsoft will 'do a Sony' but they won't mess up their launch, any of their games and their advertising - not that Sony have bad advertising as such - it's just I don't want to associate a next-gen console with a talking duck in a shirt!
Anyways, XBox has a year to deter people from getting PS2 - I think they'll make the big time...

As far as I can see, the two reasons for the PSXs success is:
1) Appeals to an older audience.
2) Had quite a head start.
This led to:
3) Excellent developer support.
And obviously:
4) Loads of games.
Now even if the PS2 was readily availiable at this moment... would it be selling sheds loads?
It is £300. It hasn't got that many games, and only a few are worth buying. It can play DVD's, but it also plays PSX games.
A LOT of people, and when I say a lot, I mean everybody I know in Pembrokeshire who owns a Playstation, which is about... 15... :D... think that the PS2 has just PSX games with updated graphics. Nothing special.

I don't think it'll be smooth sailing for Gates and Co. But I do think that they will have an advantage over some of the other companies, maybe not in the terms of experience but definatley in the way of compatability, they know all sorts of connections and what have you and the thing is they will know what will work with what, they know which connections are better and what links they can form!
I think that Nintendo will do second best especially with the GBA - NGC link, as soooo many people are buying a GBA and the NGC is supposed to be really cheap...this has got to be a bonus for Hiro! But I can't agree fully, with more than one console on the market and already talks and spec release from the PS3 (I told you so!!!!) The X-Box will have to be mighty good to be able to compete with what Sony and Nintendo have to offer over the next 5 years. And people have already purchased their PS2's so it is not COMPLETELY one sided but in a sense, with all Microboff's aces he is sure to pack a punch when the X-Box is released!
Multiplayer gaming does seem to be the future, that is a topic that we would all agree on, so if Sony don't get their on-line gaming up soon then they might see smoke at the starting line in Early 2002. Another Reason why Nintendo and Microsoft will step into the spot-light!
Thanks
