Firman takes the win on home turf but it was close

Ralf Firman has won the British Grand Prix to send the home fans away happy, although it did look like he wasn't going to win at one point.

Frentzen started the race from pole position but quickly lost the lead to Firman and Trulli. Frentzen's car looked terrible as he held up Ralf Schumacher, Fisichella, Alonso and Raikkonen. Frentzen then pushed too hard and crashed out on lap 7.

Firman and Trulli were trading times the whole race and the pit stops were the key for Trulli as he managed to get a 6 second lead and it looked all over as Firman had nothing to respond with. On lap 51, Trulli just pushed the boundaries of his car a little too far and drifted wide. Firman pounced on that opportunity and took the lead with a rejoining Trulli close behind. Trulli cut the small gap and was looking for an overtaking opportunity. With just 2 laps to go, Trulli pushes too hard and crashes out. Firman just had to keep it on the track to win.

Villeneuve and Irvine had early spins from which they never recovered and finished in fairly ordinary places. Heidfeld's car looked just as bad as Frentzen's and after a spin, managed to keep it on the track but he was circulating fairly slowly. In a bizarre incident, Barrichello and Verstappen were racing, Barrichello tried an overtake, ran wide and caught Verstappen. Verstappen flipped into the air and amazingly survived with just front wing damage. His race was effectively over by then but he showed his speed by getting the fastest lap of the race which happend to be the lap record. Alonso will be absolutely fuming as he was solidly in the points when he spun and then he spun again later on. Wilson was the only other spinner in the race.

Here's a quick look at the retirements. Frentzen was the first to go when he crashed on lap 7. Webber's engine blew on lap 45 and team mate Pizzonia's engine only lasted 11 more laps when he retired on lap 56. Fisichella's suspension gave way on lap 53 and he was forced to retire. Trulli was the final retirement on lap 59 when he crashed.

Firman wins the British Grand Prix and his championship bid looks really strong once again. Ralf Schumacher was fighting off Raikkonen for the last third of the race and just managed to keep him behind him to finish 2nd. Raikkonen caouldn't find a way past Ralf and settled for 3rd. De La Rosa may still consider himself a title contender after finishing 4th. Button continues his consistent finishing with 5th. Da Matta shows his racing qualities with an amazing 6th place finish. Michael Schumacher and Montoya had a great battle for the last points finishes with Schumacher pipping Montoya to finish 7th with Montoya 8th.
