I'm interested in getting into this for the fitness aswell as just for the sheer hell of it. I've read up a hell of a lot on survival skills, and am not completely inexperienced (but most of my camping trips involve crates of beer and major hangovers).

I've done a very small amount of hiking, with the uni society before foot and mouth shut everything down.
I'd advise you get decent walking boots if you'll be covering any real distance. And get a waterproof bag if it might rain. (Or keep everything in your bag wrapped inside a plastic bag.)
A bunch of people had waterproof trouser things that go over your normal trousers. They were the walking hardcore though. But a waterproof (light) jacket might be a good idea.
I used to have one that folds into a very small bag. Did the trick until I lost it.
Don't know about camping though.
