rel="icon" has always worked for me, and imdb for that matter.
When you save the image, surround the name with quotes in the 'File Name' box, as this will force the file to be of the ext you've given, rather than MSPaint/PSP/PSD/PS whatever, giving it their own ext in teh background.
Well, the icon didn't appear properly, but it was different to the other ones!
Maybe if I try a full link to the image it may change?
It appears that "shortcut icon" is needed, rather than just "icon" as the rel value, as "icon" didn't work.
Thanks again.

Maybe it was that trailing / that I had there...
But this one seems to state the same too...

Your rel parameter is junk.
Favicons are a client-side element, they are independant of hosts.
+--={12:20:19}=--
| rob@euripides:~$ file favicon.ico
favicon.ico: ms-windows icon resource - 2 icons, 16x16, 16-colors
+--={12:20:24}=--
| rob@euripides:~$ identify favicon.ico
favicon.ico[0] ICO 16x16 DirectClass 8-bit 1718b 0.0u 0:01
favicon.ico[1] ICO 16x16 DirectClass 8-bit 1718b 0.0u 0:01
I don't know how to create them. Gogogogooooooooogle!
Create an icon, I think it's gotta be 16x16 in size, name it favicon.ico

That's just an example.
Once that's uploaded to your main directory. Place this code in the head of the page.
When the page is added to the favourites, it will download that icon.
Yay!
Although, I haven't managed to get it to work yet. I've only tried it with NTL, Freeola it wil probably work with...
