Real Madrid have accepted a £6.9 million offer for Geremi from Chelsea, and he is having contract talks right now, according to Teletext.

Another large sum of money being splashed out by new owner Roman "Chelski" Abramovich, then, and on a player that I think will do well at Chelsea if he agrees a deal. A strong season ahead for them? Looking very much like it.

An international superstar team can play exceedingly well- this is shown by the current Real. But the way Russky boy's going, this team will be full of arguments because of the teams being selected, seeing that so many new players could well be signed. And over-buying led to Man City's problems in the 70s.

Look at the players they are going for. They are good, but bound not to be too geeedy, they have to prove themselves first.

The wage bill could still be crippling though.

Juve, AC, Inter, Lazio, Roma, Fiorentina, Parma - all have either been close to or have won it in the past 5 or 6 years. Yup. It's competitive, but it's just not some people's choice of football, due to defensive stuff. I don't mind it.

Compared to say the Italian league, where (apart from Juventus winning it for the last two years) they have had 5 different winnners in as many years.

Perhaps Barcelona are a even better example...

Or perhaps it just shows how much more competitive the spanish league is. Its silly when people say the premiership is one of the best leagues in the world when only 3 different teams have won it in 10 years.

Agreed but there is extremely minimal chance of them collapsing, results are not guaranteed but leeds are a poor comparison. Maybe Liverpool are a better example of a team which has spent a lot of money but not got the results

I didn't say that Chekski would collapse in the same manner as Leeds. I simply inferred that Leeds spent some £100million at the club, and won nothing in return.

It's entirely possible that Chelsea could do the same.

It's incredibly competitive in the top 5 these days, and nobody is guaranteed anything because some of the teams are just so damn good. This is what makes the premiership the best league in the world in my opinion.

Buying a load of high profile players will up your merchandising and get the fans in a frenzy, but other than that, it guarantees nothing.

Chelsea can buy all the good players they want but if they will all have to work very well together to get to the quality of football that Manchester United and ARSEnal play.

Even if this is setting myself up for a fall. It is highly unlikely that chelsea would flop leeds style. There is no situation (except possibly madrid) where this has actually ever happened. Leeds spent money but did so on players who were not world class and not considered to be so at the time. they were very good but not the best of the best, if chelsea start buying the likes of Davids and Vieri results will be likely of a higher class due to them being the best in the world. The old chelsea did the same, bought players who were very good but not the best (eg. Petit, Zenden, Good players who lack that edge). The other issue is even if they are bad or results don't go are way these players have been BOUGHT outright. There will be no 80 mill debt like at leeds to cripple the club, the money has been spent and we won't have banks chasing us for debts we cannot pay. Chelsea may not win the league but even if our russian friend left today we are back in a hugely strong position, we'd have no debts and a stronger playing squad.
