The reason I posted it here and not in chat was to avoid the influx of people who reply saying they want to be game designers, yet have no idea on how to go about it. But seriously, if you are considering/pursuing the games industry as a career, what things have you done/learnt so far, and which area are you looking in?

I'd like to get into the journalism side of the industry too. I don't care about the crappy pay, it's something I've always wanted to do and I'd enjoy it.

I may do but I don't know. I want to be a journalist and I may end up writing articles for NOM or something like that but nothing directly related to gaming like programming. Apart from anything else I'd need to achieve a Higher maths level A or B on first sitting and I am struggling with Standard Grade. (for all you English folk out there Standard Grade is GCSE level and Higher is A Level). I'm not overly interested in programming anyway. Maybe writing storylines and drawing story boards but not programming.

I am

I'm just at the point where I'm applying for jobs too - I applied to the studio that make the Total War series, but companies are notoriously bad at getting back to you after you apply for a job :O( I'm probably going to have to work outside the industry for a while until I build up a serious portfolio.

I took a software engineering degree course to get into the programming side of things.

I want to be a games designers, and am trying to meet people in the undustry through my website and getting into official events.

Written loads of stuff for a single game design, but nothing like graphics or a game of any sorts. Need to learn lots of code before that.

I actually had a go at making games once, with Direct X. Made half a game, but that's all.
