There are those films that will never die and will continue getting re-discovered by new generations. The Evil Dead trilogy is one of these.

Basically taking the Night of the Living Dead principle, adding a bit of a haunted house element and tons of dark humour. The Evil Dead made a star out of Bruce Campbell as Ash, the dim witted hero, and was probably the inspiration for Duke Nukem as well.

The film features all the usual 80's horror film routes, but it mocks them at the same time, preferring the mixture of frights and laughs, so you never know when to scream and when to howl.

It worked so well that Sam Rami came up with a sequel which was actually more of a remake. Same cabin, same basic storyline, but this time tons more blood and some even better one liners for Campbell. This film also provided a handy link in to the 3rd film of the trilogy, Army of Darkness.

The 3rd film took a slightly different turn and stuck Ash in Medievel England, this time fighting huge swathes of undead armies and even fighting an 'evil Ash' in one of the funniest horror film scenes ever.

Now all three are being put together for the first time in a box set, with tons of extras and both versions of the 3rd film. The good news is that because of this you'll be able to pick them up cheap in the summer sales individually, Evil Dead 2 is just £5.99 in some shops!

If you want something a bit different in your horror films, or just want see a man wrestle with his own hand, check out the Evil Dead films. They're groovy baby.

Oh, forgot about Resident Evil, that was better than I expected...The games scared me a lot more than any film has since, with the exception of my first Japanese horrors, but I think that's largely becasue I was about 10 when I first got my free copy of Resident Evil with a subscription to Playstation Power...bloody terrifying.

I think I have zombie flesh eaters somewhere, may have to dig it out, don't remember it at all..

There's a 'slow burner' one called Dead and Buried. That's ok too.

I love my clever zombie movies but there aren't enough!

Zombie Flesh Eaters. Completely inspired by Romero.

None of the waling around moaning 'brains' crap.

Oh and Resident Evil should hold your attention.

I first saw Evil Dead when I was 10, in America. Quite scary, as I'd never seen anything like it. Loved it.

Few years later, when I was about 16, my mate showed me Evil Dead 2. Didn't like it, because we laughed through most of it and I thought of it as a horror. Showed me #3, didn't like that either, it was too weird. Wasn't until a few years later, when he lent me Evil Dead, then #2 that I realised how good they were because they were so crap.

Got all three on DVD. I always buy stuff, then they announce special editions or boxsets are coming out. Ah well.

Groovy.

There's a lot of..wrong.."pure gore" kindof films, some I find better than others, but I've not found many serious zombie films aside from Romero's offerings..Or at least, which are capable of holding my attention for the length of them.

Myself, Grix and a number of friends will be off in to the Welsh countryside this Summer to attempt our own take on the genre, and I fear it may not quite make it in to the serious category.. =)

I have the Evil Dead companion book too.

Jim Carrey owes Bruce Campbell a lot too.

For more serious Zombie movies may I point you at the Romero films.

And for pure gore: Peter Jackson's Bad Taste and Braindead films are not far off the Evil Dead slant on things.

Another cool/daft *0's moviw worth checking out is They Live, which also contains a line later used as a Duke Nukem line:

"I came here to kick ass and chew bubblegum. And i'm all outta gum."

Listen to this man. I'm yet to see the original, but the second and third were fantastic, and pulled me in to the swathes of second rate zombie films which I'm still fighting my way through. Evil Dead does manage to have some more disturbing moments than many others, though; essential viewing.
