A bizarre beginning leads to a Verstappen win and a new championship leader

Jos Verstappen has won the European Grand Prix but for the first 20 laps, it could have been anyone's race. Verstappen kept cool, calm and fast throughout while almost everyone else was losing their heads.

The first lap started the mayhem. The first 4 cars were running so close that they were trying to get 3 cars into one corner! It was just as close behind them. The yellow flags were out at Turn 1 for almost 20 laps as cars were trying to overtake each other, most of them leaving bits of bodywork all across the corner.

It was inevitable that a major accident was going to happen and we were lucky that there was only the one. De La Rosa and Fisichella were scrapping down at turn 1 when De La Rosa and Fisichella hit each other. Fisichella's car rolled over and led to his retirement on lap 7. There were so many incidents, the cameras didn't catch most of them.

Michael Schumacher suffered because of the sheer amount of bodywork shards on the track and retired on lap 13 when he had irreparable wheel damage. Panis was the first of 3 cars to go out with transmission problems. He retired on lap 20. Pizzonia was the second to go on lap 30 and Trulli was the third on lap 36. Da Matta narrowly avoided a serious accident on lap 56 when his brakes failed.

Jos Verstappen kept his nose clean and won the race. Alonso couldn't quite turn pole into a win but takes the championship lead with 2nd place. Ralf Schumacher's decent run continues with 3rd place. Button drove to a steady 4th and Irvine didn't have the pace to match the leaders and drifted out to 5th. Firman was a victim of the many incidents but fastest laps helped him to 6th. Heidfeld and Barrichello came 7th and 8th respectively.

After 9 of the 17 rounds, Alonso now has the championship lead by 7 points and I think the main contenders are just starting to show their hands. Frentzen will be feeling particularly bad as he has yet to score a point this season.

We travel to France next and everyone is now chasing Alonso. The championship race is still open but the drivers near the back have to raise their game and string some results together if they want to win it.

I definitely remember Raikkonen missing a front wing early in the race. The first 20 laps were the most chaotic start to a race I have ever seen.

I don't know why you're complaining Random Hero. Alonso leads the championship by 7 points! :)
