Alonso shows everyone how it's done

Fernando Alonso has taken pole position for the European Grand Prix and demonstrated his championship potential with a stunning lap record. Alonso has now taken 3 pole positions out of the last 5 races and hasn't qualified lower than 3rd in the other 2.

Villeneuve has it all to do now after struggling to 17th on the grid. He holds a slender one point lead in the championship ahead of Alonso but that could be demolished by the end of the race. Firman is also nicely placed for a points finish with 6th on the grid. Button goes one better than Firman and takes 5th with the early championship leader, Raikkonen, looking for a podium in 4th. Trulli, De La Rosa and to a lesser extent, Coulthard, all did badly in qualifying. Trulli is 16th, Coulthard is 12th and may steal a point and De La Rosa is a distant 21st.

This is a crucial race for drivers with title aspirations although it could just bunch the field up further. Alonso is in the best position with 1st on the grid. Irvine recent qualifying form continues with 2nd. Verstappen continues his consistent run with 3rd. Raikkonen needs a result in this race from 4th. Button will want to cut the gap up front from 5th. Firman will need to get ahead of Alonso from 6th. Williams fill up the 4th row with Montoya 7th and Ralf Schumacher 8th.
