Dominant Ralf Schumacher wins a race of attrition

Ralf Schumacher has won the Canadian Grand Prix in a dominant and superlative display, while the other cars were having a real struggle to stay in the race. Only 13 cars managed to finish the race.

The incidents kicked off early when Trulli ran wide fighting for position and led to Montoya making contact with Trulli. Both of them were forced to pit with front wing damage. Coulthard was the first to retire when he ran over some of the debris from the previous accident on lap 9 and pulled off with a puncture.

Frentzen's dismal season continued when he crashed in the wall on lap 11. Verstappen was running well until his transmission failed on lap 17. His team mate only lasted 4 more laps when on lap 21, he crashed into the barriers. Da Matta was next to fall victim to the track when he crashed out on lap 27.

At this point, it seemed that anyone that finished would score points. The retirements continued on lap 41 when Heidfeld's engine blew up. Button retired on the same lap as Heidfeld with an electrical problem. The engine failures continued. Pizzonia's engine blew on lap 43 and Irvine was the last retirement with an engine blow up on lap 66 with a podium almost a certainty.

Ralf Schumacher disappeared into the distance and wins the race. Alonso and Firman were having a major scrap throughout the race but Alonso nicked second with Firman a close third. Villenueve sneaked his way into 4th with a quiet race performance. De La Rosa was a serious threat but got held up a few times and settled for 5th. Webber certainly benefitted from retirements ahead of him and came a creditable 6th. Fisichella and Michael Schumacher picked up the final points places.

8 rounds down and Villeneuve just manages to hold on to his championship lead ahead of a very determined Alonso. It's still anybodys championship as Villeneuve showed with 3 straight wins.

We are about halfway through the season and the F1 circus heads to the Nurburgring in Germany for the European Grand Prix. 9 rounds still to go!

Irvine didn't cross the line so technically didn't finish. He got classified but his race was over.

Your team mate is Irvine and no one currently owns that driver. Irvine and De La Rosa drive for Senna G.P.

Der Nazi, the European GP preview will be this weekend.
