Xbox Technologies is the name of a Florida based business. They registered the name Xbox before Microsoft did, and plan to take legal action against Microsoft.

A spokesman for Microsoft said "We will prevail."

This could lead to a number of different outcomes. Microsoft might win, even so, the consoles launch may be delayed whilst awaiting the outcome of the courtcase.

Xbox technologies might win, so the XBox will have to undergo a name change.

If Microsoft release the console, only to lose the courtcase at a later date they'll have to recall all of the consoles.

Given Microsoft aren't the US courts favourite company, it should be interesting.

Yes, and British Rail really did end up 'getting there' didn't they? :-)

This could mean very bad news for Microsoft.

If they do have to recall all their consoles or delay the release of it, the PS2 and GameCube could have already started making sure that when they do release the Xbox they'll be slaughtered in the popularity scales.

Also by that time everyone is going to be fed up waiting for the Xbox and so could very well ahve invested in a different console.

Your right MD this could be very interesting

Microsoft have always hinted that the 'X-Box' name may only be a working title, much as Nintendo's Ultra64, which became N64.

Likely outcome of the courtcase, Microsoft laugh at XBox Tech and change the name of thier machine to something like the MicroBox. A year later they buy XBox, and sack all the staff.

MIcrosoft take over the world and turn all our homes into Windows 2005 platforms

I think X-Box is the 'real' name for their console and having to change it now would be a bad thinas it's already a recognied name (by some people anyway!)

Yes, the fact that it's been officially unveiled, and has a bloody great X on the top of it, might make it a little difficult to change the name now...

I'm not so sure.

Titles get changed all the time during production, especially when they are so far from the production line.

It is an established name, but they could always release it with one name, and just allow everyone to use XBox as an unofficial nickname, which is still perfectly legal as long as Microsoft do not refer to it as the XBox themselves...

The Nintendo 64 was unveiled as the Ultra 64 but the name was changed literally weeks before it's official launch in the West.
