What came first?

This is a similar problem that the PS2 is facing at the moment.
As many owners will be aware, since the end of november there has been a lack of new releases. They are coming, but they're few and far between. I for one, only own 3 games and all were launch titles...

Some publishers are actually holding back 'finished' games due to the lack of sales on existing software. Because there aren't many PS2 consoles about (most places only have 2 or 3) not many people in the UK own one and because there are so few consoles in peoples homes, then software sales are low.
However many people are waiting for a 'killer ap' to persuade them to buy a PS2, and if these don't appear then console sales will be low.

So which is first? - More games released to persuade people to buy PS2's or more people buying PS2's to persuade publishers to release more games?

I have no doubt that with PS2 owners there is a massive demand for more quality titles, but overall demand is pretty low. I think it's up to the publishers to put AAA titles into the market place to create that damand that they require!

So come on everyone - Release the games were all waiting for!

Thank you very much.

It's something I came across when I first discovered Jeeves, and was asking him random pointless questions, "Which came first, chicken or the egg?" pointed me to a website that explained the theory much better than I ever could have done.

I`m now very impressed with meka_dragon. (More so than before). I had the chicken/egg discussion in a maths tutorial once, and we agreed the egg was first. Good explanation, just add mutation.

I think the lack of quality titles is more to do with development time, than companies saying 'We'll wait till more PS2s are sold'. The fact that the PSOne has a huge user base, and a lot of developers have been saying 'This is the last of franchise X on the PSOne', goes to show that it isn't necessarily the number of users now, it's the number of users in so many months/years. Plus if they don't start doing some kind of R&D as soon as they can, other forward thinking software houses surely will, and have a huge headstart over them.

EA are obviously are one of the biggest publishers, but (on the whole) they've done a great job 'hitting the ground running' with the PS2. And have also no doubt created a very lucrative next gen franchise in 'SSX'. Software companies are businesses at the end of the day. A couple of slack quarters, or even a whole year can kill companies, or result in them being eaten up by the big boys. Providing they have the staff to cover it, they need to get a foot in with future developments as fast as they possibly can, or otherwise end up as yesterday's news.

The egg came first. The theory of evolution would lead to a state in which two non-chicken creatures would mate and the female would lay an egg. From this egg would hatch a primitive version of the chicken we know today.

All consoles suffer from this, though. Some take off, others never really do. (chickens can't fly?)

People will buy the consoles when more AAA titles are available, these titles will be released once more people own the console.

Other developers stand by, they think "If this console starts to shift units, we'll produce games for it" rather that the "if we make them, they will come" approach.

At least Sony are in a position in which many developers are working on games, and the next wave will be here soon enough.

Some consoles never got good games (Jaguar), others never got the support (Saturn).

PS2 will be just fine.
