Why am I complaining about a charitable organisation? Well for start there are no less than 8 vendors that I have to pass to get from the hospital to the shopping precinct less than 200m away, they continually harrass you for money and then insult you or threaten you if you don't give them money or buy a Big Issue.
I mean, my heart goes out to homeless people, it really does. It's been cold, house reposessions have been high, so a lot are out there through no fault of their own at the moment, but just because I am lucky enough to have the sense to be careful or being able to find a good job, why should I have to run the gauntlet of abuse every day?
As Yahtzee Crowshaw once said, "I'm of mixed opinions on the homeless - on one hand they are tragic victims of an uncaring society but on the other they are also tragic victims that smell and shout at me in the street" I'm beginning to see where he's coming from.
So I'm complaining. I want to see what their response is. Has anybody here had problems with any of the vendors (especially pb/Machie/Vexxxed if he every lurks here - as you are under the same local area). What if complaining doesn't work. what would you suggest to make my lunchtime go freely without the fear of being mugged for my Boots Meal Deal?
^_^
My looks aren't that thug-like so unless my intention is to actually hurt someone, its hard for me to look mean enough through acting...
Just across the water from Bristol, similar things happen in Wales capital city. If I'm walking through the city centre, I can be the victim of sarcastic remarks (or abusive comments) when I refuse to buy the magazine. For all the vendors know, I could already have purchased the latest magazine, as, unless they followed my every move they simply wouldn't know.
The ones I do feel sorry for are the ones that do ask politely. I do acknowledge them by saying, "No, thanks" as I bet its awful being ignored, but if I did decide to buy a magazine from any of them it would likely be the polite ones.
I don't know how some of them can afford dogs though. Surely the council should rehome the dogs as if the owner is homeless, then the dog is too. If a homeless person can afford a dog, they're wealthier than I. And if they keep the dog to get sympathy - they obviously don't care much for the well-being of the dog...
One abusive Big Issue seller (whom I haven't seen for a while) had more piercings than I've had hot meals. Didn't know what to make of her other than I bet she never sold any magazines with her attitude.
There was one Cardiff Big Issue seller who, in his little bit of shelter, actually had a small fortune of cash (certainly more than I've got in the bank) - it was only discovered after he died...but apparently he had enough to live on should he decide to rent a place. It was many years ago so I'm not sure if he'd still be on any local news sites...I can't be bothered searching right now :P
Anyway, if you don't mind doing so, it would be great if you posted the response they give (if any) to your letter on here. I'm interested to hear their thoughts on the matter.
I have taken to your strategy, but the one that irritates me the most is the one that begs for money with it. He even yells out to me as I walk by on the other side of the road, sometimes running up to ask for change. Hate it when he does it on the way for my bus, run up behind me and demanded I give him money.
One of the others is just ridiculous, just swears and ansults you as you walk by.
The rest are ok, but just the sheer number if them is ridiculous. Everybody I talk to from the hospital or on my bus refer to it as the gauntlet.
I used to buy it as it's a good initiative, but now it's just annoying!
Generally when i see one i ignore them or move ot the opposite side to prevent them making contact.
Incidently the person who sells big issue where i live appears to have disappeared.
